By early 1965, Bob Dylan had helped revive the traditions of American folk music, had rocketed to stardom, and was considered by many to be the “voice of his generation” due to the massive popularity of his anti-war protest anthems. However, March of that year saw the release of his ground-breaking LP Brining It All Back Home — an attempt to move beyond the confines of the stereotypical folk-singer-with-acoustic-and-harmonica by featuring an electrified rock band as his ensemble. Moreover, Dylan performed live with a rock band later that year at the Newport Folk Festival. Both of these events stirred great controversy among followers of pop culture who felt betrayed by Dylan seemingly turning his back on the traditional songs that made him successful. However, had he not made these moves, the history of music would unarguably be quite different.
This is the subject matter of A Complete Unknown, a new bio-pic — based on the book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald — about Dylan during this tumultuous time in his career. Timothée Chalamet stars in the lead role with a fantastic supporting cast playing several iconic personalities from that time period in Dylan’s life. There have been several bio-pics about Dylan over the years, but none have been specifically devoted to examining this seminal turning point in his career.
