SALTBURN

Watch Trailer Director: Emerald Fennell
Writer(s): Emerald Fennell
Cast: Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike

Oliver is humbly struggling to fit in with the crowd at Oxford: He’s certainly intelligent enough, but he lacks a certain polish that characterizes the well-monied majority of students who attend the prestigious school. When he chances to make friends with Felix, an aristocratic fellow student, he’s invited to come spend the summer with Felix and his family at “Saltburn”, their massive country manor. It is here that Oliver stands to learn lessons about how the world really works as he’s initiated deeper into the lifestyle ultra-rich.

Written and directed by Oscar-winner Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), Saltburn‘s plot is a modernized cut from the same literary cloth as classic novels like Brideshead Revisited and The Great Gatsby – stories where naiveté and decadence do battle in a person’s heart to determine the true degree of their humanity. With its elegant camera-work and snappy performances from a critically-acclaimed cast that includes Barry Keoghan (Oliver), Jacob Elordi (Felix), and Rosamund Pike (Elsbeth, Felix’s mother), Saltburn has been hailed as yet another Oscar-worthy offering from the multi-talented Fennell.

Cast: Gael Garcia Bernal, Roberta Colindrez, Bad Bunny

Set in the 1980’s, Cassandro is a true-to-life dramatic account of Saúl Armendáriz, a gay man from El Paso, Texas who embarks on a career as a professional wrestler. Eventually, he opts to cross the border into Juárez where he becomes part of the “lucha libre” scene – Mexico’s unique style of high-flying, no-holds-barred wrestling. When he meets new trainer Sabrina, she compels him to let his flamboyant flag fly by performing as an “exótico”, a type of luchador known for wrestling in drag and adopting a sassy and undignified demeanor in the ring. Once Armendáriz fully embraces his new persona as Cassandro, his star begins to rise and he becomes a champion.

In his first departure from documentary filmmaking, Cassandro was written and directed by Roger Ross Williams, the first African-American director to win an Academy Award. This film stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Roberta Colindrez, and Bad Bunny.

DUMB MONEY

Watch Trailer Director: Craig Gillespie
Cast: Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D'Onofrio, Nick Offerman, America Georgina Ferrara

The “Game Stop short squeeze” of 2021 was one of the wildest financial rides in the modern history of the New York Stock Exchange: Never before had amateur traders been able to go head-to-head against the deep pockets of ultra-rich hedge funds to make (and, well, lose) a fortune in such a short timeframe. Dumb Money brings the drama, excitement, and pure bizarre-ness of this extraordinary event to the big screen — a veritable nerdy-David-vs-UHNWI-Goliath tale for the ages!

With an ensemble cast of all-star talent that includes Paul Dano as financial analyst Keith Gill, Seth Rogen as hedge-funder Gabe Plotkin, and Sebastian Stan as Robinhood App CEO Vlad Tenev, Dumb Money is based on the book The Anti-Social Network by Ben Mezrich and directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl, Pam & Tommy, Mike).

ALL DIRT ROADS TASTE OF SALT

Watch Trailer Director: Raven Jackson
Writer(s): Raven Jackson
Cast: Charlene McClure, Moses Ingram, Chris Chalk

The debut film from writer/director Raven Jackson, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt is a poetic journey through the life of Mack, a black woman living in modern-day rural Mississippi. The sparsely-dialogued plot follows Mack throughout several portions of her life, from childhood to old age, as she experiences love, loss, fear, joy…all the myriad sentiments that make a life a Life.

Jackson’s choice to utilize multiple actors for several characters as they age in the film really helps to elevate the sense of time passing as the story moves through the decades. Also, the movie was filmed on location in rural southern towns that have changed very little over the course of the last half-a-century, and this gives the film a very strong “sense of place”.

All Dirt Roads is a masterful debut and masterpiece of lyricality:  not only a moving portrayal of a life, but also a moving portrait of life in the Deep South.

From the Hills & Hollers: Appalachian Stories Film Series

We’re thrilled to present the 3rd annual From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Stories Film Series for 2024-2025! Launched in 2022, this series has so far been a resounding success with the local community, so we’re extremely pleased to continue our presentation of this very special line of programming!

The Hills & Hollers series seeks to foster a deeper connection between the residents of Athens city and the Ohio University community to the cultural legacy of the surrounding region through films that examine the many facets, both positive and negative, of life in Appalachia. Each year’s batch of films is, in large part, the product of filmmakers who have intimate knowledge of living in this environment and, as a result, are well-suited for representing the realities of Appalachia on the big screen.

Short introductions/lectures will provide context for the film and identify the underlying issues related to the film’s portrayal of Appalachian culture. After each screening, a special guest speaker will engage with the audience in a Q&A session to further discuss important topics related to the film.

All events in the series are presented with free admission.

This series is sponsored by the Ohio Honors Program, University Libraries, College of Health Sciences and Professions, The Department of Social and Public Health, GO Local, University College, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, The Multicultural Center and The Black Student Cultural Programming Board, Center for Campus and Community Engagement, and The Women’s Center.
