Beat the Heat: FLOW

Viewing: July 12,2025

Watch Trailer Director: Gints Zilbalodis

After its home is destroyed by a cataclysmic flood, a solitary black cat sets off on a journey to find dry land. Along the way, Cat meets several other animals in the same predicament – a capybara, a lemur, a bird, and a dog – and the little group bands together to continue the quest. They find a small boat, and, by learning the importance of courage, trust, and reliance on one another, they attempt to navigate the uncharted waters of an inundated world and, if lucky, find a new place to call home.

Already selected to compete for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Latvian director Gint Zilbalodis’s Flow is being called one of the best (non-Disney) animated films of recent memory.

Beat the Heat: WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT

Viewing: July 19,2025

Watch Trailer Director: Robert Zemeckis
Cast: Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Charles Fleischer, Kathleen Turner, Mel Blanc
Awards: Oscar - Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Special Achievement Award

Eddie Valiant is a down-and-out gumshoe in late-1940’s Hollywood who gets entwined in a case that is sure to test what he’s made of. When a big-shot cartoon producer hires Valiant to dig up some dirt on Jessica, the the seemingly-unfaithful “toon” bombshell spouse of cartoon superstar Roger Rabbit, the private eye travels to “Toontown” to sniff out the goings-on of a rival studio exec (and the guy who happens to run Toontown itself). Valiant goes to see Jessica perform her famously sultry crooning act and seems to catch her in the act of seducing the rival exec; however, the man is murdered the following day and Roger Rabbit becomes Suspect No. 1. Valiant has his doubts about Rabbit’s guilt and ends up helping him get to the bottom of this strange set of circumstances. This puts the two at odds with Judge Doom – the chief justice of Toontown – who might just be the lynchpin of what starts to look more and more like a frame job!

Viewing: August 02,2025

Watch Trailer Director: Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar, Benjamin Renner
Writer(s): Daniel Pennac
Awards: Oscar - Best Animated Feature (nom)

In the orphanage underground where she lives, Celestine, a young mouse, has been taught that bears are nasty and evil…not the kind of folks one should associate with. As she prepares to follow the typical rodent trajectory of becoming a dentist, Celestine (who’d much rather be an artist) is tasked with stealthily venturing to the outside world where she must collect the lost baby teeth of bear cubs and bring them back for study. On one such outing, she is discovered by a family of bears and chased into the outside world. She spends a tense night of fear in a trash can and meets Ernest, a unique bear who might just change her ideas about how well mice and bears can get along.

Song of the Sea, the second film in Tomm Moore’s “Irish Folklore” trilogy, is the story of a young Irish boy named Ben who learns that his mute sister Saoirse is actually a “selkie” — a mythological creature that can shapeshift from human form to that of a seal. The two children are the son and daughter of a lighthouse keeper’s wife who disappeared after giving birth to the girl and is presumed to have died. Ben has always believed that Saoirse was at fault for their mother’s death and is resentful; however, when the duo run away from their Granny’s house to return to their lighthouse home, they have an adventure beyond their wildest imaginations: Saoirse is tasked with using her magical power of song to save all the world’s mythological beings from the evil witch Macha, and, in the process, restore the wholeness of her family’s broken home.

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON: Last Day Wednesday, January 10th

Watch Trailer Director: Martin Scorsese
Writer(s): Eric Roth
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemmons, Lily Gladstone

About the Film

When a spate of mysterious murders sweeps through the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma in the early 1920’s, the Bureau of Investigation (an early 20th-century precursor to the FBI) sends agents into the frontier to investigate the matter. The murders coincide with the discovery of massive oil deposits on the Osage land, and the murders seem to be tied to the newfound wealth that begins to permeate the once-poverty-stricken tribespeople.

With its perfect genre blend of drama, Western, and crime noir, Martin Scorsese’s KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is the highly-anticipated adaptation of the critically-acclaimed 2017 non-fiction book of the same name. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemmons, and Lily Gladstone.

The Athena is now open!

We have been closed since May to address some structural repairs with our building. The Athena opened in 1915 and these repairs were necessary to keep the theater thriving for years to come.

This will be a partial reopening. We will be showing films in our upstairs theater starting on Jan 5th. The two downstairs theaters will remain closed as work continues in those spaces. Those theaters are anticipated to reopen in a few months.

We are so delighted to bring film back to Court Street! Thank you to our amazing community for your patience and support during the closure.

First up, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON & ANATOMY OF A FALL. These will be very limited engagements so don’t wait to see them. Buy your tickets now. We only have access to one screen right now, so we are trying to fit as much cinema goodness in as possible. This means films that will have fewer show times. But this schedule will allow us to highlight more of best independent, world and critically acclaimed films coming out in 2023-2024!

See you at the movies!

About the Film

PAST LIVES tells the story of Nora and Hae Sung, two friends who share an intimate connection during childhood then fall out of touch as they grow towards adulthood. The directorial debut of Korean filmmaker Celine Song, this understated romantic drama is partially based on events from Song’s own life. The film is a meditation on the nature of relationships in the modern world where connecting is easy, but staying meaningfully connected is the true challenge.
