BETWEEN THE TEMPLES

Watch Trailer Director: Nathan Silver
Cast: Jason Schwartzman, Carol Kane, Robert Smigel, Dolly de Leon

Jason Schwartzman stars as Ben Gottleib, an aging Jewish man who serves as cantor to the congregation of his synagogue – a role which is responsible for leading the chanting and choral components during religious rituals, and which requires years of rigorous education. All is not well in Ben’s life, though: he’s lost not only his voice, but also his wife to a freak accident and, as a result, his will to live. Like all good Jewish families, Ben’s two mothers attempt to salve his wounds by setting him up with the daughter of the local rabbi; however, he has a chance encounter with Carla, his grade school music teacher (played by the magnificent Carol Kane), who, like Ben, is also a widower and may have just what it takes to help Ben find some harmony again.

The latest film from Nathan Silver, Between the Temples is a dram-edy that explores life, love, loss, and languishing through the lens of tradition and unorthodoxy. Critics have praised the on-screen chemistry between Schwartzman and Kane, as well as the excellent performances from the supporting cast which includes Robert Smigel, Dolly de Leon, and Caroline Arnold.

A COMPLETE UNKNOWN

Watch Trailer Director: James Mangold
Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Boyd Holbrook

By early 1965, Bob Dylan had helped revive the traditions of American folk music, had rocketed to stardom, and was considered by many to be the “voice of his generation” due to the massive popularity of his anti-war protest anthems. However, March of that year saw the release of his ground-breaking LP Brining It All Back Home — an attempt to move beyond the confines of the stereotypical folk-singer-with-acoustic-and-harmonica by featuring an electrified rock band as his ensemble. Moreover, Dylan performed live with a rock band later that year at the Newport Folk Festival. Both of these events stirred great controversy among followers of pop culture who felt betrayed by Dylan seemingly turning his back on the traditional songs that made him successful. However, had he not made these moves, the history of music would unarguably be quite different.

This is the subject matter of A Complete Unknown, a new bio-pic — based on the book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald — about Dylan during this tumultuous time in his career. Timothée Chalamet stars in the lead role with a fantastic supporting cast playing several iconic personalities from that time period in Dylan’s life. There have been several bio-pics about Dylan over the years, but none have been specifically devoted to examining this seminal turning point in his career.

KINDS OF KINDNESS: Last Day Thursday, July 18th

Watch Trailer Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Cast: Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Defoe, Hunter Shafer

Coming hot on the heels of the resounding success of Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos is back with a new film starring an ensemble cast that includes Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Willem Dafoe.

Lanthimos has constructed Kinds of Kindness around the principle of a “triptych” – three separate segments that follow characters dealing with existentially challenging situations: A man strives to out-maneuver the path that life has predetermined for him, a police officer and his wife wrestle with uncertainty after she suspiciously returns from an alleged drowning incident, and a woman goes in search of an unorthodox spiritual guide as the result of a prophesy.

MAXXXINE

Watch Trailer Director: Ti West
Cast: Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Bobby Canavale, Giancarlo Espisito, Halsey, Kevin Bacon

Mia Goth returns to reprise her role as aspiring (adult) film star Maxine “Max” Minx in Maxxxine, the third installment of Ti West’s critically-acclaimed “X” franchise of slasher-horror films from A24 Studios.

The year is 1985 and Max has survived the (classic slasher film-style) massacre on a rural Texas farm and is still seeking fame on the big screen. She finally gets her big break; however, this time there’s a serial killer known as the “Night Stalker” preying upon young starlets on the streets of L.A. Not only that, but Max’s newfound notoriety also threatens to expose her checkered past. It remains to be seen whether reaching the top of the ladder of success will be worth the price.

A direct sequel to X, this latest film peers behind the curtain of the Hollywood film industry and features a supporting cast that includes Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire), pop musician Halsey, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), and the-man-who’s-in-every-movie Kevin Bacon.  It’s not only a modern homage to legendary horror films of the past, it is also a love letter to the 80’s – a groundbreaking decade for entertainment and pop culture in general. Following the resounding success of its two predecessors, Maxxxine is almost guaranteed to be a hit with fans and critics alike!

MICKEY 17

Todays Show Times: 5:057:45

Watch Trailer Director: Bong Joon-ho
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo

The future looks bleak for Mickey Barnes, so he decides to sign up to become an “expendable”, a menial laborer who gets cloned and sent to an off-world colony on the icy planet of Niflheim. Mickey’s clones take on several dangerous (and lethal) jobs. Each time a clone dies, another is produced and the tough work continues. On one assignment, however, one of Mickey’s clones – “Mickey 17” – encounters trouble and is presumed dead when it fails to come back from the job. In the meantime, “Mickey 18” has already been produced and set to work. When the two clones encounter one another, they wrestle with the existential undercurrents of being disposable cogs in a corrupt and compassionless planetary government.

From writer/director Bog Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, Parasite) comes a wild new sci-fi thriller with a sense of humor, based on the novel by Edward Ashton.
