This event will include some brief opening remarks by Jane Riley and Lori Brown of the Athens County LOSS Team

The Frame of Mind Series seeks to showcase stories that serve as bridges to real conversations, fostering a space for empathy and connection, a space where we, as a community, can lean into vulnerability and face difficult conversations together.

So for the month of May, we invite you to embrace empathy, get together, and step into a new Frame of Mind!

About the film

Blending archival footage and interviews with friends, family, and colleagues, Roadrunner: A Film about Anthony Bourdain seeks to tell the story about one of America’s biggest pop cultural icons. From his humble beginnings in the sweat-filled kitchens of New York, to his first forays into becoming a writer, to his massive success as the host of food/travel shows like No Reservations and Parts Unknown, and, finally, to his shocking death by suicide, this film attempts to both paint a fitting portrait of a one-of-a-kind workaholic and explain why he chose to end his life during the height of his success. Brimming with charisma, uncompromising and opinionated, fearless and infinitely curious: Everyone who knew Anthony Bourdain would surely say the same thing — there will never be another like him.

About the speakers

Jane Riley has been a dedicated member of the Athens County LOSS Team for the past 7 years. She brings over 20 years of experience as a Social Worker in the fields of co-occurring substance use and mental health services, offering both professional knowledge and empathy to those she serves. Jane experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide in 2011 which has motivated her to support others navigating similar grief. As a member of the team, she provides comfort and hope to individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Out side of LOSS, Jane enjoys friends/family, reading, thrifting, and taking car of all six of her cats!

Lori Brown has been a volunteer with the Athens County LOSS team since its beginning. She is committed to offering a calm and compassionate presence to loved ones in the immediate aftermath of a suicide death. Her background is in social work and she has been working in the Athens community since 1996 by supporting individuals through difficult moments. Outside of LOSS, Lori enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, photography, and crocheting!

About the film

With an ensemble cast that includes Jim Carey, Kate Winslet, Mark Ruffalo, and Kirsten Dunst, this mind-bending romance incorporates elements of sci-fi and the surreal to tell the story of Joel Barish (Carey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Winslet) who, in the wake of a falling out, both decide to undergo a brain procedure whereby their memories get erased by a sketchy company that promises the result of post-procedure happiness. But, even with their (good and bad) memories erased, their true feelings might just be enough to bring the two back together again.

About the speaker

China C. Billotte Verhoff (Ph.D, Purdue) is an Associate Professor of Interpersonal Communication in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University. Situate at the intersection of interpersonal and organizational communication, her research program explores the lived experiences of individuals with stigmatized and marginalized identities to address systemic issues of inequality and foster well-being. With her work on stigma, support, disclosure, and social justice, her broader goal is to a) re-center marginalized voices in knowledge creation and communication theorizing, and b) highlight the implications of her work for communication-centered approaches to equality and justice. Her most recent projects have examined the discursive forces that animate the meanings of maternity leave and how mothers internalize , navigate and resist the stigmatization of their rage. Dr. Billotte Verhoff’s work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Communication Monographs, Sex Roles, the Journal of Language and Social Psychology, and Health Communication.

Dr. Billotte Verhoff teachers graduate and undergraduate courses in interpersonal communication, family communication, and communication and ethics. Highlighting the synergistic interplay between her research, teaching, and service, Dr. Billotte Verhoff has spent several years facilitating inclusive pedagogy efforts at the university. She is a co-facilitator of the Inclusive Pedagogy Academy (IPA) run by the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment. Her work in the area of inclusive pedagogy has been recognized with the Chairs and Deans Emerging Leadership Award. Dr. Billotte Verhoff is also the recipient of the Univerity Professor Award, one of the two highest teaching honors available at Ohio University.

When not teaching, Dr. Billotte Verhoff enjoys film photography, spending time with loved ones, and hiking.
