About the film

Samantha Smart (who also wrote the screenplay) stars as “Al”, a young music therapist who plies her trade by healing troubled adolescent clients with song. When Al encounters Charlie, a traumatized and hard-hearted teenage girl, she finds it hard to make breakthrough and help Charlie have a more positive outlook on life. However, Al slowly-but-surely begins to penetrate Charlie’s tough exterior, and the two find camaraderie when a project comes along that helps the two form a solid bond of friendship. As it turns out, Al has her own trauma-filled past and, as she helps her new client, she is forced to confront her own existential struggles.

About the filmmaker

Libby Ewing is an award-winning director, writer, and actor who grew up in the foothills of Appalachia.  Ewing’s feature directorial debut CHARLIEBIRD received top prize of the Founders Award for “Best Picture” at Tribeca Festival 2025 as well as “Best Performance,”, SCAD Savannah Film Festival Best Narrative Feature 2025, Lucca Film Festival Critics Marcello Petrozziello Award, and Sarasota Film Festival Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature, among others. Her work focuses on female driven stories that explore themes of class, spirituality, and grief. She splits time between Ohio and NYC.

About the film

Set in 1988 Cuba as the government dispatched HIV patients to AIDS centers under military rule, The Companion narrates the unlikely friendship between a boxing champion and a conflictive patient. After failing a doping test, Horacio Romero has no other choice but to serve a sentence. His fate is in Los Cocos, a sanatorium under military rule where HIV patients are compulsorily confined, with the exception of a weekly pass to visit their families under the supervision of personal wardens called “companions.” As a companion, Horacio is supposed to keep an eye on Daniel — the most conflictive patient in the ward — and get him to comply to the regulations. Their interests immediately collide as Daniel is set to spend his last days in freedom and is ready to do anything to make this happen. Horacio, on the other hand, dreams about boxing again to get his champion’s status back. For that to happen, however, he must first win this battle out of the ring.

About the speakers

Anna Earl is a senior at Ohio University majoring in Marine Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. She has interned in both fisheries and marine science conservation; she hopes to work in marine fisheries after graduating.

 

 

 

Lauren Empie is an environmental science and sustainability student. She works in Molly Morris’s lab and is very interested in fisheries and aquatic conservation.

About the film

The Correspondent is based on the true story of award-winning Australian foreign correspondent and journalist Peter Greste. The film details Greste’s two-year arrest and imprisonment in Cairo at the hands of the Egyptian Government after he was charged and convicted of spreading false news and aiding the Muslim Brotherhood while serving as an Al Jazeera English journalist reporting on the unrest in the streets during the Arab Spring uprising. Incorporating flashbacks of Greste’s past reporting assignments — including a fateful BBC assignment in Somalia wherein his friend and colleague Kate Peyton was shot and killed — this poignant film from Australian director Kriv Stenders, and based on Greste’s own memoir, deftly examines the real-world consequences faced by professional journalists who attempt to speak truth to power.

About Peter Greste

Professor Peter Greste is an award-winning foreign correspondent who spent 25 years working for the BBC, Reuters and Al Jazeera in some of the world’s most volatile places. From Afghanistan, to Latin American, Africa and the Middle East, he reported from the frontlines and beyond, although he is best known for becoming a headline himself, when he and two of his colleagues were arrested in Cairo while working for Al Jazeera, and charged with terrorism offences. In letters smuggled from prison, he described the arrests as an attack on media freedom. The letters helped launch a global campaign that eventually got them released after more than 400 days in prison. He has since become a vocal campaigner and advocate for media freedom – a stance that has earned him awards from Britain’s Royal Television Society, the Walkley Foundation, the RSL’s ANZAC Peace Prize, the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Human Rights Medal, and the International Association of Press Clubs’ Freedom of Speech Award. He has written about his experiences in Egypt and what he regards as the global war on journalism in a book, The First Casualty.

About the film

When Johnny’s successful life trajectory as a banker and a soon-to-be-groom is upended when his (unsatisfied) fiancée Lisa decides to seduce his best friend Mark, he begins taping phone conversations between Lisa and her mother in an attempt to figure out who Lisa is having an affair with. Meanwhile, as things spiral downward for Johnny, he leans more on Mark and a psychologist for help keeping it all together. However, the affair between Mark and Lisa comes to light (in a very public way), flinging Johnny headlong into a nervous breakdown…and worse!

About the film

Ten-year-old Lucía’s family lives in the Island of the Sun (Isla del Sol) in the middle of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia; a place that’s as mystical as it is picturesque. When her father breaks from their routine one morning and leaves for the city to make money, Lucía finds it difficult to cope with his absence, building her daily life around the expectations of their reunion. After school, Lucía and her younger sister Maribel weave Totora reeds into figurines that her mother sells to numerous tourists. But the rhythm of life on the island and the passage of time help her realize her father is no longer the person she longed to have back. She must find her own path. Lucía is thinking of going to the city herself, but she has no money. It’s time she took her destiny into her own hands.

With a subtle commentary on environmental tourism and the exploitation of “the other” that goes two-way,  Catalina Razzini’s touching rural tale masterly captures the landscape of Isla del Sol.

The Met: Live in HD: Verdi’s MACBETH

Two of opera’s most extraordinary artists return to The Met: Live in HD for Verdi’s thrilling take on the immortal Shakespearean tale of the scheming couple determined to seize power at any cost. Following past triumphs in many of Verdi’s signature baritone roles, Quinn Kelsey is the Scottish king haunted by the ghosts of his murderous ascent to the throne, opposite Lise Davidsen—the world’s reigning dramatic soprano—as the power-mad Lady Macbeth, whose ruinous ambition damns them both. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium for a penetrating production by Louisa Proske, a brilliant young director making waves around the world. Rounding out the all-star cast are tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the heroic Macduff and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as Macbeth’s friend-turned-victim Banquo.

The screening will begin at 12:55 p.m. and will conclude at approximately 4:30 p.m.

About the films

Vs. Goliath: Appalachia: Deep in the hollows of the Appalachian Mountains, the construction of a fracked gas pipeline rips through mountaintops, forests, and streams, bearing down on rural communities across Appalachia. Russell, an Army veteran who once swore an oath to protect and serve his country, now finds his home, waters, and forests under threat. He enlists in the battle to defend his community. Russell joins forces with people along the pipeline route, including Georgia, an apple farmer in Virginia; Maury, a retired schoolteacher in West Virginia; and Crystal and Jason, Indigenous community leaders in North Carolina. Together, they form a movement that faces numerous setbacks as they take on the multibillion-dollar corporations behind the pipeline. When one of the nation’s most powerful politicians intervenes, the stage is set for a high-stakes showdown.

About the speaker

Dr. Tiffany Arnold is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the College of Health Sciences and Professions where she coordinates the Appalachian Studies Undergraduate and Graduate Certificate Programs. Additionally, she teaches Public Health and Environmental Health Courses focused on Appalachian studies.

One of Dr. Arnold’s interests is the way that the Appalachian region is portrayed in films and in the media, and she draws upon this interest to help others think critically about their own perceptions of the region and, most importantly, where these ideas come from. Complicated portrayals in the media often come up in popular culture in the form of mainstream horror films or “thrill-billy” films. While the film Cocaine Bear is based on a series of true events, Dr. Arnold will discuss how dramatic interpretations of true events can be both problematic and entertaining at the same time.
