Dads Weekend: MONTY PYTHON’S LIFE OF BRIAN

Watch Trailer Director: Terry Jones
Cast: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin

Monty Python delivers the group’s sharpest and smartest satire of both religion and Hollywood’s epic films. Set in 33 A.D. Judea where the exasperated Romans try to impose order, it is a time of chaos and change with no shortage of messiahs and followers willing to believe them. At it’s center is Brian Cohen, born in Bethlehem in a stable next door, who, by a series of absurd circumstances is caught up in the new religion and reluctantly mistaken for the promised messiah, providing ample opportunity for the entire ensemble (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin) to shine in multiple roles as they question everyone and everything from ex-lepers, Pontius Pilate and haggling to revolutionaries, crazy prophets, religious fanaticism, Roman centurions and crucifixion, forever changing our biblical view.

Still holds up beautifully, as both pointed satire and silly, stakes-free comedy.

Darker, funnier and more action-packed than the first film, 'Chamber' seems inspired as much by Steven Spielberg's galloping 'Raiders of the Lost Ark.'

Not only is this dazzler by far the best and most thrilling of the three Harry Potter movies to date, it's a film that can stand on its own even if you never heard of author J.K. Rowling and her young wizard hero.

Parents Weekend: RAISING ARIZONA

Watch Trailer Director: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
Writer(s): Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman

We’re celebrating OU Parents weekend with a showing of RAISING ARIZONA, an early Coen Brothers favorite about a couple (Nic Cage and Holly Hunter) who want to have a child… so they take one.

A surreal, hyperactive farce in which a bumbling petty thief and the lady cop who keeps arresting him fall in love and decide to start a family. When they discover they can’t have babies, they steal one from a furniture mogul who has just sired a set of quintuplets. The joys of parenthood are soon marred, however, by the difficulties of raising an infant on the run. The none-too-bright couple must flee across the southwestern desert in order to elude the villainous biker that has been hired to retrieve the tyke.

“A wacky, happy, daring, darkly comic tale of parenting outside the law.” -Rita Kempley, Washington Post

“Starting from a point of delirious excess, the film leaps into dark and virtually uncharted territory to soar like a comet.” -Geoff Andrew, Time Out

“To their old fascination with Sunbelt pathology, to their side-winding Steadicam and pristine command of screen space, the Coens have added a robust humor, a plot that keeps outwitting expectations and a…dollop of sympathy for their forlorn kidnapers.” -Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine

Moms Weekend: GREY GARDENS

Director: Ellen Hovde, Albert Maysles, David Maysles, and Muffie Meyer
Cast: Edith Bouvier Beale, Edith (Little Edie) Bouvier Beale

Grey Gardens is a fabled home located in the elite seaside Village of East Hampton, Long Island.  Of course, Grey Gardens is also a landmark documentary, a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and an HBO movie starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. Most importantly, Grey Gardens is a breathtaking and alluring portrait of Edith Beale and her daughter Edie.
In April, the spotlight will shine back on the Edies, when Grey Gardens (the original 1970s documentary, not the Drew Barrymore remake) returns to theaters. America’s favorite high-society dropouts even got a makeover for the occasion—a “striking new 2K restoration [has been] made by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with the Academy Film Archive at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences”. The Athena Cinema will feature a special 2 day run of the cult classic documentary for OHIO Moms Weekend.

If you’ve somehow managed to never catch Albert and David Maysles’s cult classic, this is a good opportunity to take in all of its beautiful weirdness on the big screen. The doc offers a very intimate look into the lives of Edith “Big Edie” Ewing Bouvier Beale and Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale (and cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis), as they live surrounded by the detritus of their past in a decaying East Hampton mansion, Grey Gardens.

Watch the trailer for the 2K Restoration of Grey Gardens HERE.
