Yet the functioning and regulations of this business remain largely obscure to many, and its hidden costs affect us all. Who pulls the strings in this multi-billion dollar business? To what extent does the industry control our policy makers? How does it affect the environment above and below the waterline? And what’s life like for modern seafarers?

Defend Our Future Presents RANCHER, FARMER, FISHERMAN

The new documentary Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman tells the inspiring story of heartland conservation heroes who are feeding the world while stewarding the land and water.

The film is a tribute to people like Justin Knopf, a fifth-generation Kansas farmer revolutionizing industrial scale agriculture to rebuild the fertility, biodiversity and resilience of his soil, and Dusty Crary, a fourth-generation Montana rancher who forged alliances between cattlemen, federal agencies, hunters and environmental groups to protect the Rocky Mountain Front.

Based on a book by best-selling author Miriam Horn of Environmental Defense Fund, Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman was directed by Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Susan Froemke and Emmy winner John Hoffman, and narrated by award-winning journalist Tom Brokaw.

This show will be presented free and will consist of a short introduction, screening, and post-show talkback.

Filmed in Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon’s signature whimsical style, Lost in Paris stars the filmmakers as a small-town Canadian librarian and a strangely seductive, oddly egotistical vagabond. When Fiona’s (Gordon) orderly life is disrupted by a letter of distress from her 88-year-old Aunt Martha (Academy Award nominee Emmanuelle Riva) who is living in Paris, Fiona hops on the first plane she can and arrives only to discover that Martha has disappeared. In an avalanche of spectacular disasters, she encounters Dom (Abel), the affable, but annoying tramp who just won’t leave her alone. Replete with the amazing antics and intricately choreographed slapstick that has come to define Abel and Gordon’s work, Lost in Paris is a wondrously fun and hectic tale of peculiar people finding love while lost in the City of Lights.

Sustainability Series: SAVING MES AYNAK & OUR LAST REFUGE

Saving Mes Aynak

Saving Mes Aynak follows Afghan archaeologist Qadir Temori as he races against time to save a 5,000-year-old archaeological site in Afghanistan from imminent demolition. A Chinese state-owned mining company is closing in on the ancient site, eager to harvest $100 billion dollars worth of copper buried directly beneath the archaeological ruins. Only 10% of Mes Aynak has been excavated and some believe future discoveries at the site have the potential to redefine the history of Afghanistan and the history of Buddhism itself. Qadir Temori and his fellow Afghan archaeologists face what seems an impossible battle against the Chinese, the Taliban and local politics to save their cultural heritage from likely erasure. Saving Mes Aynak examines the conflict between cultural preservation and economic opportunity through the lens of the Afghan archaeologists and local villagers who work and live near Mes Aynak.

Our Last Refuge

This is the story of the Badger-Two Medicine, the sacred homeland of the Blackfeet Nation, and the decades-long struggle to protect it from gas exploration. Located at the intersection of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Glacier National Park, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness, the Badger is an undeveloped expanse of mountains, ridges, river valleys, and wetlands. In 1981, the U.S. government illegally leased the Badger at $1 per acre for oil and gas development—without consulting the Blackfeet Tribe and without conducting a proper environmental review. One of the highest profile conservation efforts in recent history, Our Last Refuge is the first in-depth telling of this critical struggle.
