Beat the Heat: SONG OF THE SEA

Watch Trailer Director: Tomm Moore
Awards: Osacr - Best Animated Feature (nom)

Song of the Sea, the second film in Tomm Moore’s “Irish Folklore” trilogy, is the story of a young Irish boy named Ben who learns that his mute sister Saoirse is actually a “selkie” — a mythological creature that can shapeshift from human form to that of a seal. The two children are the son and daughter of a lighthouse keeper’s wife who disappeared after giving birth to the girl and is presumed to have died. Ben has always believed that Saoirse was at fault for their mother’s death and is resentful; however, when the duo run away from their Granny’s house to return to their lighthouse home, they have an adventure beyond their wildest imaginations: Saoirse is tasked with using her magical power of song to save all the world’s mythological beings from the evil witch Macha, and, in the process, restore the wholeness of her family’s broken home.

Sustainability Series: ACKROYD & HARVEY: THE ART OF ACTIVISM

Previously screened

Watch Trailer

Join us Wednesday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. as our 14th annual Sustainability Film Series concludes with an award-winning documentary about two artists whose work bridges the gap between expression and environmental activism!

Admission is FREE – Tickets are required

About the film

Ackroyd & Harvey: The Art of Activism is the latest film from award-winning documentary maker Fiona Cunningham-Reid. An intimate portrait of internationally acclaimed artists, Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey, who work at the intersection of art, activism, biology and ecology, and their quest to shake humanity into action on climate catastrophe – whatever the personal cost.

Intrinsically bound up in protest, the film follows the pair collaborating with Extinction Rebellion, and co-founding the movement, Culture Declares Emergency. Their work is uncompromisingly preoccupied with the climate and ecological crisis, and has become a rallying point for the environmental movement. It’s won them international acclaim, but the film leaves us in no doubt – they’d be creating it whether the world was watching or not.

Sustainability Series: PLASTIC PEOPLE with Liliana Kijeck

Watch Trailer Director: Ben Addleman, Ziya Tong

Join us Wednesday, September 17th at 7:00 p.m. as our Sustainability Film Series continues with an award-winning documentary delving into the relationship between humans and microplastics!

Admission is FREE and open to the public – Tickets are required

This event will feature a pre-show presentation by Liliana Kijeck

About the film

The award-winning feature documentary Plastic People investigates our addiction to plastic and the growing threat of microplastics on human health. Almost every bit of plastic ever made breaks down into “microplastics.” These microscopic particles drift in the air, float in all bodies of water, and mix into the soil, becoming a permanent part of the environment. Now, leading scientists are finding these particles in our bodies: organs, blood, brain tissue, and even the placentas of new mothers. What is the impact of these invisible invaders on our health? And can anything be done about it?

Acclaimed author and science journalist Ziya Tong takes a personal approach by visiting leading scientists around the world and undergoing experiments in her home, on her food, and her body while collaborating with award-winning director Ben Addelman (Discordia, Bombay Calling, Nollywood BabylonKivalina v. Exxon) in an urgent call to action for all of us to rethink our relationship with plastic.

About the speaker

Liliana Kijeck is a recent graduate of Ohio University’s Master of Science in Environmental Studies Master’s program and a new Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps AmeriCorps member with Raccoon Creek Partnership at the Ridges in Athens. Originally from the Cleveland area, Liliana grew up spending all of her time outside and in Lake Erie, which prompted her to study political science at Cleveland State University in order to understand environmental politics and policy, the politics of conservation and sustainability, and human-environment relationships. During her Master’s program, she spent her time focusing directly on human and environmental interactions, water quality, and specifically plastic pollution and microplastic occurrence in drinking water in relation to socioeconomic and demographic aspects.

Join us on Thursday, September 18th at 7:00 p.m. as we kick off our Appalachian Stories Film Series!

This event will include a pre-show presentation by author Carter Sickels

Admission is FREE – Tickets are required

About the film

Based on the critically-acclaimed novel by Carter Sickels, The Evening Hour tells the story of Cole Freeman, a nursing home worker who has made a side-hustle selling the excess prescription pills of his elderly patients to the local people in his rural West Virginia town. Cole’s motive is not profit, however: he sees himself as a more compassionate source of the addicting drugs than the local drug dealer who cares more about money than the lives he is destroying. It’s a delicate balancing act – Cole must make sure that he doesn’t overstep his bounds and draw the ire of his competition. This delicate balance starts to erode, though, when an old friend of Cole’s returns to town with the goal of getting set up in the local drug trade.
