The Met: Live in HD: Puccini’s TURANDOT

Two of today’s most thrilling voices share the title role of the legendary cold-hearted princess: Christine Goerke, the Met’s reigning dramatic soprano, and Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska. Tenors Yusif Eyvazov and Yonghoon Lee trade off as the bold prince determined to win Turandot’s love, alongside sopranos Nicole Car and Michelle Bradley as the devoted servant Liù and bass-baritone James Morris and basses Alexander Tsymbalyuk and Ferruccio Furlanetto as the blind king Timur. Marco Armiliato conducts Puccini’s stirring score.

Uptown Art Hop: Featuring PETITE MAMAN for Mother’s Day

Join us for a special screening as part of the May Uptown Art Hop. In honor of Mother’s Day, we are featuring PETITE MAMAN, from the acclaimed, contemporary French filmmaker Céline Sciamma. The film explores girlhood and mother daughter relationships with an enchanting twist.

 

About the film

Céline Sciamma continues to prove herself as one of the most accomplished and unpredictable contemporary French filmmakers with her follow up to PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, the uniquely emotional, PETITE MAMAN. Following the death of her beloved grandmother, 8-year-old Nelly accompanies her parents to her mother’s childhood home to begin the difficult process of cleaning out its contents. As Nelly explores the house and nearby woods, she is immediately drawn to a neighbor her own age building a treehouse. What follows is a tender tale of childhood grief, memory and connection.

 

Uptown Art Hop

Taking place the second Sunday of every month, the purpose of the Art Hop is to provide greater visibility for artists and art projects in the Uptown area through simultaneous art offerings.

Starting May 8th, several artist studios located in the 8 North Court building and the Athena Cinema will be hosting events during the Hop. Both of these locations add a wonderful connectivity to sites of the Art Hop project and we are excited to include two historic buildings to the event. The complete list of participating venues now include The Union, The Athena, Donkey Coffee, 8 Court Studios and Casa Nueva.

The 8 Court artist studios host a wide variety of artists– fabric arts, ceramics, broom-making, acrylics and more. Visitors can begin visiting the 8 Court Studios as early as 2PM. The Athena will screen BAFTA Best Film nominee PETITE MAMAN at 5:30PM.

I really always try to think and to visualize what kind of impact I want a film to have because, the film art is opportunity to for a moment have a glimpse of another reality. But I’m also really obsessive about how it stays with you. And, for instance, with “Petite Maman,” I had, like, one image. What I wanted the film to have as an impact was, like, a mother and a daughter are in a cinema. The film ends. Credit rolls. They get out of the room. They have to go home. There’s the bus. They have to run to catch the bus. And they will run differently together.

About the film

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary-part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was never seen and largely forgotten–until now. SUMMER OF SOUL shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. Ohio University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion in conjunction with the Black Student Cultural Programming Board, the Multicultural Center, the Campus Involvement Center, the LGBTQ Center, PRISM LGBTQA+ Youth Art Program and the AAPISU present a viewing of the documentary Paris is Burning.

Watch it free, then tune in and submit questions for a post-show talk with former NFL defensive tackle Esera Tuaolo about his experience as a queer person of color.

To watch and participate, please use the registration form below. An email will be delivered to you when the film becomes available to stream, containing a link to watch and a link to Thursday’s Zoom discussion. Registrants will have access to film in advance, though we recommend viewing the films on the day of the panel discussion.

About the film

This 1990 documentary, directed by Jennie Livingston, is an intimate and colorful portrait of Harlem drag ball culture in 1980s New York City. In weekly competitions between drag “houses,” young people of color perform elaborate routines according to fashion-inspired categories of “realness,” disappearing into a fantastical world that celebrates their flamboyant expressions of gender and sexuality. Paris is Burning is a moving meditation on the meanings of community, family, and desire against an urban backdrop of poverty, racism, transphobia, homophobia, violence, and the looming HIV/AIDS crisis.

About the speaker

Esera Tuaolo: Veteran NFL Player & LGBT Role Model

Since “coming out of the closet” in 2003, Esera has been speaking to schools and corporations about the pervasiveness of homophobia in sports and business, helping organizational leaders understand how to create a safe environment for members and employees. Audiences of all ages learn how to identify and peacefully combat bullying and other forms of discrimination. Audiences are inspired to be their best selves by speaking to their individual truths without fear or intimidation.

RAIN DATE NOTICE: Tickets are non refundable however we have planned alternate “rain” dates for each event. In the event of inclement weather, we will announce the date change on our website and all social media the morning of the event.

FAQ PAGE

Where is parking located?

Parking is available in university lots 202, 200, and 201, (highlighted in yellow above), which are open to visitors after 5 p.m. When you enter using South Park Drive, you will pull around past the screening area on your left to reach space for parking. The screening area will be only a short walk from the lot.

When should we arrive?

We will begin seating on the field for each event at 8 p.m. The event will begin at 8:30 p.m.

What will seating look like?

Folding chairs and blankets! Seating will not be provided and it is up to patrons to bring their own blankets and chairs to the space if they do not wish to sit on the grass. The field is mostly flat with some hillside towards the back, near the road.

*In addition to chairs and blankets, remember to bring extra layers for when it gets chilly late at night!*

Will there be restroom access?

There will be limited restroom access at the screening site, however guests will have access to the Putt People First Miniature Golf Course restrooms, located within walking distance of the site.

Are masks required? (UPDATED)

Following Ohio University public health protocol, individuals will not be required to wear face coverings outdoors. Per CDC guidance, we strongly encourage unvaccinated individuals wear face coverings and maintain physical distance from other unvaccinated individuals, even when outdoors. Our staff will adhere to the standards of the University’s COVID Safety Protocol.

Do we need tickets?

Yes! Tickets must be purchased in advance. When you arrive at the screening area, an Athena employee will ask for the name of the cardholder who purchased your tickets to validate entry. If you purchase concessions online ahead of time, you can pick up your concessions at this time.

While we may have tickets to sell the night of the event, it is strongly encouraged that you reserve your tickets in advance in case of a sellout.

Will concessions be available?

We will have some concessions, including soda, popcorn, and candy in limited supply at the event, which can be purchased with cash. Patrons are encouraged to pre-order their concessions online and retrieve them when they are checked for tickets. No outside concessions permitted.

What will happen if it rains on the night of the event?

Each outdoor screening will have a backup date should the weather not cooperate. The Athena will communicate through social media, email, and this website should the decision be made to postpone an outdoor screening. You will not need to repurchase your tickets or concessions should the date move. All orders will be honored on the night of the screening.

Backup dates are planned for the following dates:

  • The BATMAN showing scheduled for June 3rd has already been moved to its rain date of Saturday, June 5th
  • June 24th showing of THEY LIVE – Saturday, June 26th if necessary
  • Third Program in July TBA

What about accessibility?

We will have limited availability in a small parking lot closer to the site, reserved for those with accessibility needs. Please note that this outdoor site does feature rough, uneven terrain. Please contact us ahead of time so we can accommodate your needs at athenacinema@ohio.edu.

On April 15, OHIO’s Contemporary History Institute is hosting Dr. Richard McKay discussing “Patient Zero: Seeking Epidemic Origins from AIDS to COVID-19” on April 15 from noon to 1 p.m.

Dr. McKay’s book, Patient Zero and the Making of the AIDS Epidemic, published in 2017 by the University of Chicago Press, was named by CHOICE Review as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2018 and produced as a documentary feature film, Killing Patient Zero. The film won the American Historical Association’s 2020 John E. O’Connor Award for outstanding presentation of history through film.

The OHIO LGBT Center is proud to sponsor a stream of the documentary one the weekend following Dr. McKay’s talk (April 16 through April 18). Register below and you will receive the free link to stream in your email.

About the film

After the Stonewall riots and at the height of the gay liberation movement in America, an entire generation were busy celebrating their newfound emancipation, unaware of an impending epidemic. A disease that seemed determined to wipe out an entire generation of gay men, was largely ignored by politicians and the mainstream media.

Gaetan Dugas was a French-Canadian flight attendant, who offered to help early scientific research into the origins of AIDS. An unfortunate series of events followed and he would be vilified as Patient Zero, the man who gave us AIDS.

About the speaker

Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Dr. Rich McKay came to the UK in 2005 with over a decade of teaching experience and having worked in the health and fitness fields, and in film and television production. At the University of Oxford, he completed a master’s degree and doctorate in history, focusing on HIV/AIDS and public health. He continues to have one foot in the higher education sector: since 2013 he has held a part-time Wellcome Trust research fellowship at the University of Cambridge and his research has been published in the Bulletin of the History of Medicine and Nature. His first book, Patient Zero and the Making of the AIDS Epidemic (University of Chicago Press, 2017), was released as an audiobook (HighBridge Audio, 2017), selected as a CHOICE Review Outstanding Academic Title for 2018, and developed into the documentary feature film, Killing Patient Zero (2019). In recognition of his contribution to historical scholarship, Dr. McKay was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2019.
