Sustainability Series: FARMSTEADERS

Athena Cinema, Environmental Studies, and the Alden Library present the sixth year of the Sustainability Film Series, working in partnership with many sponsors. Our vision and goal are those of years past: to offer attendees the opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of the current issues related to global environmental and sustainable challenges and solutions. We aim to bring together students, faculty and regional community members. The program recognizes the strength of this integration, coming together and learning from each other. Following each screening, we invite audience members to join us for a panel discussion hosted by faculty members, students, and community members. Please join us for a conversation following these beautiful, thought-provoking and timely films. All admissions free.

A story of local farmers from Laurel Valley Creamery in Meigs County, Ohio. Farmsteaders is as much a study of place as it is a study of persistence. Having abandoned a career as a food processing engineer at General Mills, Nick returns home, the prodigal son, and he, his wife Celeste and their young family resurrect his late grandfather’s dairy farm. Heroic, benign and accessible, Nick and Celeste’s meditations on life, legacy, and resistance offer an unexpected voice from a forsaken people – those who grow the food that sustains us.

TRAIL RUNNING FILM FESTIVAL

From world-class filmmakers to the best works made by weekend warriors The Trail Running Film Festival takes the audience on a virtual run through forests, up mountains, beyond emotional obstacles, and across the finish line. The two hours of films are shown in a nice theater with comfortable seats, a large screen, and a nice sound system. We see this night as a fun way to come together with your running buddies and new friends to celebrate the sport and our community.

*The films begin at 7:30pm. We encourage folks to arrive before the films start to socialize with your friends, meet new friends, get to know our sponsors, buy your drinks and snacks/food and pick out your seats. Maybe even buy a Trail Running Film Fest t-shirt!

*Seats are limited so help your friends out and remind them to get their tickets before the show is sold out!

SYRIAN IDENTITY AND HOMELAND

A film screening of 8 short Syrian films (90 minutes) made by Syrian film-makers who experienced the crisis in Syria that began in 2011 but are now living outside Syria. The event will be followed by a discussion.

The screening and discussion event is curated by Basil Masri Zada, Ph.D. Candidate of Interdisciplinary Arts.

The event is FREE and open to the public.

One of the city’s last decent tow truck drivers risks everything on a desperate quest to become a chaser and provide for his struggling family.

Director’s Bio:

Rafal Sokolowski is an Assistant Professor of film at the Ohio University and an award-winning film and theatre director. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is supported by the National Film Board of Canada, the Canada and Ontario Arts Councils and Bravo!FACT. He is the artistic director of Blind Dog Films, which specializes in developing and producing narrative fiction. He previously taught film and directing at York University, Ryerson University, and was a guest artist-teacher at the National Theatre School of Canada, Soulpepper Theatre Company, and Warsaw College of Communications and Media. Sokolowski’s Three Mothers, starring Kristin Booth and Camilla Scott, screened at many international festivals, including the 2009 CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival, and his most recent film, Seventh Day, won Best Short Film at the 2013 Ekran – Toronto Polish Film Festival. Sokolowski is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, holds an MFA from York University and is an apprentice of the National Theatre Academy of Krakow (directing).
