McCarey for Progress Campaign Event: Special Screening of HEAD OF STATE

Watch Trailer Director: Chris Rock
Cast: Chris Rock, Bernie Mac, Robin Givens

Join us Friday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m. for a special campaign event featuring a screening of Chris Rock’s 2003 political comedy Head of State!

This is an exciting opportunity to gather together in the final days of Micah McCarey’s campaign for Ohio’s House of Representatives, District 95. Come for laughs, camaraderie, and to show your support for a candidate who’s committed to progress and positive change in our community.

Admission is free and open to the public – Tickets are still required

Meet-and-Greet: 7:00 – 7:30 p.m.

Film Begin: 7:30 p.m.

About the Film

Written and directed by Chris Rock, Head of State tells the story of Washington, DC alderman Mays Gilliam who finds himself unexpectedly chosen to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States when the original nominees for prez and vice-prez are accidentally killed in a plane crash. Gilliam is considered a local hero because he selflessly saved the life of a woman who fell victim to an explosion, and the Dems think that, even though he is not likely to win, Gilliam’s visibility will serve their chances for a victory in an election down the road. Plus, he’s infinitely likeable! When Mays finds himself actually rising in the polls, he starts to take his campaign seriously and begins to speak his mind about what he thinks are the real problems facing the country…in the hilarious way that only Chris Rock can!

Rooftop Screening FAQ’s

When should we arrive?

On the evening of each event, attendees are instructed to head directly to the Athens City Parking Garage located at 15 E Washington St. Two elevators are available for transport to the top-most level, in addition to a stairwell (for those who enjoy a fitness challenge). Seating for the events will begin at 7:30 p.m., and the films will begin at about 9:00 p.m. (or when it is dark enough for the projected image to be seen on the screen).

Concessions (popcorn, soft drinks, water, candy, etc) will be available for purchase on the rooftop.

Do we need tickets?

Yes! Tickets are $8 for most screenings. Please check individual webpages for pricing. We will have staff checking tickets at the rooftop entrance. If you leave the rooftop, you will need to bring your ticket(s) with you for re-entry.

While we may have tickets to sell the night of the event, it is strongly encouraged that you reserve your tickets in advance in case of a sellout.

What will seating look like?

Patrons are strongly encouraged to bring their own chairs, blankets, sleeping bags, or whatever other seating arrangement will make them comfortable. We will mark off sections with paths to allow for access to the concession area and elevators.

What should I bring?

Don’t forget – the temperature on the rooftop often drops significantly once the sun goes down, even in warmer months. So, we encourage you to bring a hoodie, jacket, socks, and/or an extra blanket…whatever you need to stay warm.

Will there be restroom access?

Unfortunately, No.

Due to the recent upgrades to the Athens City Parking Garage, there are no longer any bathrooms available at the facility. As a result, The Athena Cinema bathrooms (20 S. Court St) will be available to patrons of the rooftop movie screening. Just make sure that you hold onto your ticket so that you will be able to get back into the film screening when you return to your seat.

Will concessions be available?

Concessions will be available for purchase on the rooftop.

Concessions include popcorn, soda, water bottles and candy.

What about alcohol?

No alcohol will be served or available for purchase.

Will there be a non-alcoholic option?

Yes! We will have non-alcoholic beverage options — canned soda and water bottles — available at our rooftop concession stand.

What will happen if it rains on the night of the event?

Each outdoor screening will have a foul-weather backup plan should the weather not cooperate. The Athena will communicate through social media, email, and our website should the decision be made to either relocate the screening to the Athena Cinema or postpone an outdoor screening. You will not need to repurchase your tickets should the event or the date move.

In the event of rain, the event may be moved inside to the Athena Cinema at 20 S. Court St.

What about accessibility?

The parking garage has elevator access from each floor that leads directly to the roof. Accessible parking is available in the garage and on the streets in metered spots.

Where is parking located?

Parking is available in the Athens City Parking Garage levels 2 through 5. The address for the parking garage is 15 E Washington Street. You will use the entrance on Washington Street, NOT College Street. The College Street entrance is only for permit holders.

For more info about what to expect parking-wise at the Athens City Parking Garage, click here

Additionally, you may park on the streets of Court, Union, College, Washington and State. These spots are metered until 7 p.m. Metered street parking is free after 7 p.m.
