Carrie White has a complicated life. At sixteen, not only is she in the depths of adolescence, but she’s also the daughter of an abusive, religiously fanatic mother and is often bullied at school because of her naïveté. Based on Stephen King’s first novel, this unforgettable film from director Brian De Palma was originally released in 1976, so this year will mark the 50th anniversary of this classic horror film! Enter the Kingdom: THE SHINING

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, January 27th at 7:00 p.m. for a Stephen King adaptation that really “shines”!

Admission $8

About the film

Jack Torrance is a writer who’s looking to kill two birds with one stone: writing a novel and finding a temporary job that both pays well enough to provide for his family and gives him enough free time to ply his literary craft. He seemingly finds the perfect fit when he is hired to be the winter caretaker at the Overlook Hotel. What initially appears to be a dream job for Torrance soon becomes a descent into madness as the dark history of the hotel reveals itself during one of the worst winters in recent memory.

While the film adaptation differs in some significant ways from the Stephen King story on which it is based, The Shining bears the mark of director Stanley Kubrick’s perfectionist approach to filmmaking and is replete with some of the most unforgettable imagery and acting performances in all of cinema history!

Enter the Kingdom: CREEPSHOW

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, February 3rd at 7:00 p.m. for the frighteningly fun first foray for Stephen King as a screenwriter!

Admission $8

About the film

George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead) directs this wild horror film that’s served up in the form of an anthology, much like the classic E.C. horror comics of old that inspired it. Over the course of its six Stephen King-penned segments, we meet: A gruesome comic book character-come-to-life, spend time with an extended family with some serious skeletons in the closet, take some flights of fancy with a yokel whose dreams become all too real, watch a man exact revenge on his unfaithful girl and (undead) lover, see a high school janitor find out what’s inside a mysterious crate, watch an insect-hating germaphobe do battle with a host of cockroaches, and finally see how everything gets tied together.

With an ensemble cast that includes not only Stephen King and his son Joe, but also Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau (The Swamp Thing), Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, and Ed Harris, Creepshow is both a huge dose of King’s brilliance at weird storytelling and a prime example of 80’s horror!

Enter the Kingdom: THE DEAD ZONE

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, February 10th at 7:00 p.m. for a classic Stephen King/David Cronenberg pairing guaranteed to put you in “the zone”!

Admission $8

About the film

Riding rollercoasters is supposed to be fun, right..? Not so for Castle Rock schoolteacher Johnny Smith: After a day at the amusement park, Smith drives home with a headache and has a nasty car accident that puts him in a coma. He wakes up to learn that not only have five years gone by, but he also now has the ability to psychically see into the past, present, and future of anyone he touches. It doesn’t take long before word of Johnny’s newfound gift spreads and he finds himself in unenviable positions as his ability turns out to be more of a (lethal) liability.

The Dead Zone is a taut sci-fi thriller from horror-suspense master David Cronenberg (ScannersThe FlyThe Shrouds) and stars a fantastic cast that includes Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Tom Skerritt, and Martin Sheen. It is regarded by many fans and critics to be one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King novel.

Enter the Kingdom: STAND BY ME

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, February 24th at 7:00 p.m. for a film that showed us a different side of Stephen King!

Admission $8

About the film

Meet Gordie, Chris, Teddy, and Vern: four young friends who embark on a journey of curiosity one summer in the 1950’s to go see the dead body of another local boy that lies somewhere in the woods beyond the town. They believe that, by discovering the body, they’ll be hailed as local heroes. Along the way, they share adventures, tell each other jokes, and chide one another the way that boys do in adolescence. When they finally reach their destination, however, the gang gets more than they bargained for — the dead body is tied somehow to a larger local crime, and “Ace”, the town outlaw, has also shown up to claim credit himself for finding the victim. This leads to a showdown that ultimately proves to be a rite of passage for the group of youngsters and a story none of them will ever forget.

Released in 1986 and directed by the late-great Rob Reiner, Stand By Me was one of the first films to demonstrate a different, less horror-centric side of Stephen King’s story-telling prowess. Still considered by many to be one of the best adaptations of King’s work, this classic coming-of-age film features breakout performances from young actors Kiefer Sutherland, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Wil Wheaton, and Jerry O’Connell – all of whom would later go on to have notable careers in film and television.

Enter the Kingdom: PET SEMATARY

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:00 p.m. for a classic Stephen King horror movie that puts the “pet” in petrifying!

Admission $8

About the film

When Dr. Louis Creed and his family relocate from the big city of Chicago to rural Maine, they strike up a friendship with their likeable neighbor. The neighbor hears about the death of the family cat and encourages the Creeds to bury the deceased animal in the “pet sematary” located in the woods behind the Creeds’ new home. The feline, however, miraculously comes back to life; only, this time, it isn’t the cuddly friend the family has been used to…it now has a real bad disposition. Dr. Creed learns that the backwoods memorial garden is actually part of an old Mi’kmaq Native-American burial ground that has the power to resurrect the dead. Soon thereafter, one of the Creed children is struck by a fast-moving truck and tragically killed. Heartbroken, Louis opts to bury his dead son in one of the pet cemetery plots (against the advice of his neighbor), hoping that the ground will work its magic and bring the boy back to life. It certainly does, but the re-animated child, like the cat before him, returns with a vengeance!

Pet Sematary, with its screenplay by Stephen King based on King’s award-winning 1983 novel, is a classic, full-blown horror film that’s still beloved by fans and critics over four decades later.

Enter the Kingdom: MISERY

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, March 17th at 7:00 p.m. for Stephen King’s chilling tale of fandom-gone-wrong that garnered actress Kathy Bates an Oscar!

Admission $8

About the film

What are the chances..? You’re a successful novelist returning to the city from a remote mountain hideaway with the manuscript of your yet-to-be published bestseller, and a snowstorm causes you to lose control of your car and end up hurt with no one around for miles. This is the fate of Paul Sheldon, a writer of romance novels, as he heads back to New York from Colorado. Lucky for Paul, he’s discovered before he freezes to death by Annie Wilkes who gets the writer back to the cozy warmth of her home and tends to hi wounds. As it turns out, not only is Annie a former nurse, she’s also a mega-fan of Sheldon’s novels — to say she is obsessed with them is an understatement. When Paul lets Annie read his new manuscript, however, he soon finds out that underneath Annie’s congenial, praise-lavishing exterior lies a much darker personality that rises to the surface when she learns what Paul has done to her favorite literary character.

This Rob Reiner-directed pairing of iconic actors James Caan and Kathy Bates was a huge hit when it was released in 1990, earning Bates an Academy Award for Best Actress. Anyone who’s seen it can immediately see why…her performance in this film is unforgettable!

Enter the Kingdom: THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m. for an epic adaptation of a Stephen King novella about a prison escape — filmed in Ohio!

Admission $8

About the film

After he is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the alleged murder of his wife and her lover in 1947, banker Andy Dufresne is transferred to the notoriously-tough Shawshank Prison to live out the rest of his days behind bars. Andy, however, is innocent and doesn’t intend to give up his freedom so easily. As time goes on, he strikes up a close bond with “Red”, another inmate who is serving a life sentence, and the two men learn many things from one another. Eventually, Andy’s financial know-how is utilized by the prison’s cold-hearted warden to improve Shawshank’s balance sheet (and to help the warden launder a significant amount of money). As a result, Andy gets an easier time in the harsh conditions of the prison. When Red, skilled at smuggling contraband items, procures for Andy a couple of unique items, Andy plans his escape now that he’s no longer under the warden’s watchful eye. Andy finally implements his well-thought-out scheme and breaks free of Shawshank’s chains. Once he gets to the outside world again, he goes off-the-grid, but not before he brings the warden’s scandalous behavior into the light. Andy also leaves a trail for Red, who eventually serves his time, earns parole, sets out to find his old friend.

Based on a novella by Stephen King and nominated for 7 Academy Awards, The Shawshank Redemption is another sterling example of King’s ability to tell incredible stories. Similar in tone and scope to other classic prison dramas like The Birdman of Alcatraz, Cool Hand Luke, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, this epic drama examines how incarceration and the desire to overcome authority can unveil a person’s true humanity and inspire them to achieve amazing things!

Enter the Kingdom: THE MIST

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, March 31st at 7:00 p.m. as we close out our Enter the Kingdom Series with a good ol’ fashioned monster flick where the real adversary is divisiveness!

Admission $8

About the film

As a mysterious mist begins to envelop the town of Bridgton, Maine, the residents begin to hear rumors of sinister things out there in the obscuring fog…nightmarish things! It soon becomes clear that the situation is more serious than just some freak weather system as military personnel start appearing and townsfolk start disappearing. As more people fall victim to the mist monsters, the tension mounts and paranoia runs high. Some of the residents go so far as to suggest that the mist and its minions are some form of divine retribution delivered upon humankind by god; while others strive to maintain a sense of calm and order to push back against the breakdown of the social contract. Ultimately, these two factions are brought into a bloody confrontation with one another in lieu of banding together to battle the common enemy…a horrific, Lovecraftian enemy that may be the result of strange US Army experiments.

Hailed for its stellar camera work and its politically relevant storyline, The Mist is one of three adaptations of Stephen King’s writing directed by Hungarian filmmaker and fellow master-of-horror Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, The Walking Dead, Stranger Things)!
