This true story, adapted from an acclaimed segment of NPR’s ‘This American Life,” is a story of fighting for freedom. In 1980, an innocent teenager is gunned down on the streets of Brooklyn. After pressuring a child to identify a witness, innocent 18-year-old Colin Warner is arrested and sentenced to life in prison for the murder. In the years that follow, Warner’s childhood friend, Carl KC King, does everything in his power to prove his friend’s innocence. 

Series description:

This series is an initiative of the African Educational Research Network (AERN), as part of an effort to fulfill its mission, which is, “to broaden the scope of sociopolitical, educational and economic understanding about the continent of Africa and to support through research conducted on, in and about the African continent the dissemination of information associated with education and human development pertaining to people, products and systems on the continent of Africa”. The movie series is organized in joint-partnership with The African Studies Center, Center for International Education, Ohio University, The Patton College of Education, The African Studies Center, The African Symposium (TAS) journal, and Doctoral Specialization Program in Comparative and International Educational Leadership.

The purpose of the series is to engage, inspire and educate students, faculty, staff, and the Athens community at-large about issues of Africa and the celebrate the diversity of the African continent, its peoples, cultures, and richness. 

There will be a short introduction before each film and a panel discussion following the screening. A reception will also be offered.
