This latest film from Polish writer/director Paweł Pawlikowski (The Last Resort), starring Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler, details a pivotable moment in the life of 20th century German literary icon Thomas Mann, who fled his homeland in 1933 as the Nazis began to assume power and reshape the nation. It is now 1949, the Cold War is in full swing, and Germany has seen many changes as Mann and his daughter Erika embark on a cross country road trip so that Mann can receive the Goethe Award in Frankfurt. During the course of the trip, both father and daughter are confronted by the essence of what it means to be a German, how to define that identity, and how to reconcile the nation’s illustrious cultural history with the dark chapter brought about during WWII.
