It’s the summer of 1991, and Janet (Julianne Nicholson), an aging down-to-earth acupuncturist, has retreated to rural Massachusetts to spend some quality time with her young daughter Lacy (Zoe Zeigler). The girl is at the age where being sociable is a real challenge, and Janet tries to gently sever the proverbial “apron strings” by inviting three people over to her home for a visit: her boyfriend, a close female companion, and the leader of a local theater troupe. Lacy, however, is not exactly ready to let go of her dependence on her mother and warily struggles to embrace the demands of young adulthood.
