WHERE TO INVADE NEXT: Last Day Thursday, March 31st

Watch Trailer Director: Michael Moore
Writer(s): Michael Moore, Krista Kiuru, Tim Walker

To learn what the USA can learn from other nations, Michael Moore playfully “invades” them to see what they have to offer.

“a crazy-like-a-fox documentary hellbent on seeing the best in people. Other people. Not us Americans. Turns out we suck at practicing what we preach. It’s classic Michael Moore.” -Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“[Moore has] made his most enjoyable film in years and also his most inspiring, the antidote to prevailing global doom and gloom.” -Peter Howell, Toronto Star

HITCHCOCK/TRUFFAUT: Last Day Thursday, March 31st

Watch Trailer Director: Kent Jones
Writer(s): Kent Jones, Serge Toubiana
Cast: Mathieu Amalric, Wes Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich

In 1962, Alfred Hitchcock and a 30-year-old François Truffaut sequestered themselves in a windowless Hollywood office for a weeklong conversation. The result: the seminal book “Hitchcock/Truffaut,” published a half century ago, dissecting every film Hitchcock had made until then, illuminating his masterful techniques, making the case for the popular director as an artist, and influencing generations of filmmakers. Kent Jones brings “the Bible of Cinema” to invigorating life. He interviews filmmakers whose work has been profoundly influenced by Hitchcock: Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Richard Linklater, Olivier Assayas, and many others.

“Kent Jones’ doc on the groundbreaking interview book gets you drunk on Hitchcock’s films again. Nirvana for movie lovers.” – Peter Travers, The Rolling Stone

“This is a jewel box of a movie for anyone who loves either Hitchcock or Truffaut – or better yet, both.” – Stephanie Zacharek, TIME Magazine

SEEDS OF TIME

Watch Trailer Director: Sandy McLeod
Language: English

A perfect storm is brewing as agriculture pioneer Cary Fowler races against time to protect the future of our food. Seed banks around the world are crumbling, crop failures are producing starvation and rioting, and the accelerating effects of climate change are affecting farmers globally. Communities of indigenous Peruvian farmers are already suffering those effects, as they try desperately to save over 1,500 varieties of native potato in their fields. But with little time to waste, both Fowler and the farmers embark on passionate and personal journeys that may save the one resource we cannot live without: our seeds.
Topics: Agriculture, food, seeds, policy, climate disruption, saving seeds. Talkback with panelist Janice Brewer.
“Although it may not be the most vivid or exciting subject for cinematic exploration, the documentary ‘Seeds of Time’ offers a vital, clear-headed look at the effects of climate change on global food security.” – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times
“‘Seeds Of Time’ neatly utilizes stunning nature photography, zippy animation, map-centric graphics, and stock footage to further clarify its subject matter.” – Kate Erbland, The Dissolve

Spotlight on Documentary: IN THE TURN

Watch Trailer Director: Erica Tremblay
Language: English

IN THE TURN follows Crystal, a 10-year-old transgender girl growing up in rural Canada, as she navigates the difficult and complicated world that surrounds her. Tormented at school by teachers and peers alike, she faces daily assaults in the form of insults and physical altercations. The pain she endures at school takes a toll on not only her self-esteem, but also on the emotional stability of her family.
The film documents Crystal’s journey as she and her family struggle against the challenges of prejudice, hatred and ignorance. After being denied the right to join local athletics teams due to her gender, Crystal and her mom serendipitously discover the Vagine Regime, an international queer collective of roller derby players comprised of people of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds and identities. The Vagine Regime not only accepts Crystal, but actively supports her journey. Crystal emerges from exclusion into empowerment: she steps out of the shadows and onto the track.
IN THE TURN weaves Crystal’s story into the broader narrative of the evolution of roller derby from a niche sport into a social movement with strong roots in the LGBTQ community. Crystal’s story finds its place among the journeys of other queer skaters whose stories we film across the United States — from LA and San Francisco to Austin, Brooklyn and Minneapolis. Crystal adds her profile to the mosaic of other transgender, lesbian, and queer roller derby skaters who have found acceptance and empowerment in the Vagine Regime.
IN THE TURN will be introduced by Dr. Lorain Marsan, a visiting assistant professor: women’s, gender and sexuality studies, and following the film there will be a talkback with Director Erica Tremblay.
Erica Tremblay is an award- winning filmmaker based in Boston where she works as a producer for the creative agency Digitas. She is the co-founder of Homespun Pictures and her films have been featured on PBS and the Independent Film Channel. In 2012, she received the Emerging Filmmaker award at the Kansas City Film Festival for her documentary HEARTLAND. Erica is enjoying her 9th season of roller derby with the Boston Derby Dames
This screening is part of the Athena’s SPOTLIGHT ON DOCUMENTARY SERIES and sponsored by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Film Division, Media Arts department, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, the Women’s Center, and Athens Ohio Roller Derby, in collaboration with the LGBT Center’s Queer Studies Conference.

The Athena Cinema & Athens International Film + Video Festival Present A Visit with Charles Burnett & One Night Only Screening of KILLER OF SHEEP

Watch Trailer Director: Charles Burnett
Writer(s): Charles Burnett
Cast: Henry G. Sanders, Kaycee Moore, and Charles Bracy

As part of the 43rd Athens International Film + Video Festival, The Athena Cinema is honored to host renowned filmmaker Charles Burnett. Two of his films will be screened during the festival and Burnett will be in attendance to speak with audiences about his work and career.

Burnett’s first film, Killer of Sheep, was shot on 16 mm for his master’s thesis at UCLA. The film was largely ignored until a re release garnered the attention of the Guggenheim Foundation. In the years following the re release it won many awards including the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival and has been celebrated worldwide.

Killer of Sheep examines the black Los Angeles ghetto of Watts in the mid-1970s through the eyes of Stan, a sensitive dreamer who is growing detached and numb from the psychic toll of working at a slaughterhouse. Frustrated by money problems, he finds respite in moments of simple beauty: the warmth of a coffee cup against his cheek, slow dancing with his wife in the living room, holding his daughter. The film offers no solutions; it merely presents life — sometimes hauntingly bleak, sometimes filled with transcendent joy and gentle humor.

“Killer of Sheep caught the lives of the children with a fidelity to how kids really do fight, play, and cry — and how they can sometimes be cruel simply because they’re so scared.”  — Rodger Ebert

Free admission supported by Ohio University’s Film Division, Black Student Cultural Programming Board, Multicultural Center and Programs, and the Athena Cinema. Tickets are free, however there are a limited number of seats available. Patrons are encouraged to secure tickets in advance.

Science on Screen: EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT with Arthur Trese

Watch Trailer Director: Ciro Guerra
Writer(s): Ciro Guerra and Theodor Koch-Grunberg (based on the diary by)
Cast: Nilbio Torres, Jan Bijvoet and Antonio Bolivar

As part of the 43rd Athens International Film + Video Festival, The Athena Cinema is proud to present EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT as part of the Science on Screen series

At once blistering and poetic, the ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, the third feature by Ciro Guerra. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, SERPENT centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant.

In conjunction with the film there will be a talk with Ohio University Associate Professor of Environmental and Plant Biology, Arthur Trese.

Science on Screen is a project of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and The Coolidge Corner Theater. The Science on Screen program pairs with a short talk with a scientist or technology expert. The free Science on Screen events are fun and engaging and offer dynamic speakers an unexpected jumping point to teach their field of expertise in a way that is accessible to a diverse audience.
