Classics & Cocktails: O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?

Watch Trailer Director: The Coen Brothers
Cast: George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, John Goodman, Holly Hunter

When three convicts escape from a Mississippi chain-gang, they go on the hunt for buried treasure and wind up on a harrowing and hilarious adventure that Homer himself could scarcely come up with!

The featured cocktail is the Dapper Pie Spritz, made with Appleton rum, fresh lemon and apple juice, turbinado sugar, Tiki bitters, seltzer and cinnamon garnish.

The Coen Brothers expertly blend together the Depression-era South, Homeric epic poetry, and delta folk/blues in their sepia-tinted satire O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? Inspired as much by The Odyssey as by the 1941 Peter Sturgis film Sullivan’s Travels, this follow-up to Fargo and The Big Lebowski represents The Coens at the height of their powers.

Featuring unforgettable performances by George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson, the cast also includes Chris Thomas King, John Goodman, Holly Hunter, and cameos from a host of luminaries from the folk music scene of the time. The Grammy-winning soundtrack, produced by music legend T Bone Burnett, is a who’s-who of American folk, bluegrass, and country music performers; and, the film was nominated for both the Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars at the 2001 Academy Awards ceremony.

Beat The Heat: WONKA

Watch Trailer Director: Paul King
Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Hugh Grant, Paterson Joseph

Ever wonder how everyone’s favorite candy man came to be so..? Timothée Chalamet stars in Wonka the film that tells the backstory of Roald Dahl’s classic character – Willy Wonka!

Before he was the head honcho of the famed Chocolate Factory, the young Wonka was part-inventor-part-magician, with a sweet tooth for cocoa-flavored confections that offer a bit more magic than the standard sugar buzz. Willy invents “hoverchocs”, a chocolatey treat that makes people levitate, and signs a contract with an agent who promises to help him achieve his dream of starting his own chocolate shop. But, rival Arthur Slugworth (Paterson Joseph) and his other nefarious partners undermine Willy’s good fortune. Thankfully, help comes to Willy from an unlikely source – an Oompa Loompa named Lofty (Hugh Grant) – and things are set in motion that will result in the whimsical Chocolate Factory finally becoming a reality.

Nominated for numerous awards – including a Golden Globe and several People’s Choice honors for Chalamet – director Paul King’s Wonka features excellent special effects, an energetic cast, and a batch of new songs that all combine to revitalize one of the all-time greatest characters in the history of fantasy films.

Movies on the Rooftop: STRANGE BREW – An Official 2024 Brew Week Event!

Watch Trailer Director: Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas
Cast: Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Max von Sydow

Join us for a special rooftop film screening in conjunction with our Ceramics at the Cinema event and the 19th Annual Ohio Brew Week celebration!

Screening of this film will take place atop the Athens City Parking Garage. Seating will begin at 8:00 p.m. and the film will begin around 9:00 p.m. (whenever it gets dark enough). In case of rain in the forecast, the event may be relocated to The Athena Cinema.

Ok, you hosers…time to set out for the Great White North!

Two of Canada’s finest comedians, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, team up as beer-swilling brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie in this comedy classic from 1982. Hatching a plan to get a bunch of free Elsinore beer by putting a mouse in an empty beer bottle, the two buffoons get caught up in an even bigger scheme when they find their selves at the Elsinore brewery castle – the Brewmeister (Max von Sydow), in Bond-villain fashion, is trying to take over the world by putting a mind-control drug in the beer. Will the McKenzie’s unquenchable thirst ultimately end up saving us all..?

Written and directed by Moranis and Thomas, Strange Brew grew from humble beginnings as a sketch on SCTV, Canada’s version of Saturday Night Live. (Very) loosely based on Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Hamlet, this film is a bummer only if you hate to laugh out loud, eh.

Beat The Heat: THE LAST UNICORN

Watch Trailer Director: Arthur Rankin Jr, Jules Bass
Cast: Mia Farrow, Alan Arkin, Jeff Bridges, Christopher Lee

From Rankin/Bass Productions comes this classic 1982 animated fantasy film that tells the story of the Last Unicorn. One day, our equine heroine learns of The Red Bull’s villainous efforts to chase all unicorns to the ends of Earth and embarks on a quest in search of the rest of her kind. Along the way, she is taken into captivity by an evil witch who makes her a carnival sideshow attraction. However, she escapes with the help of Schmendrick, a bumbling magician, and they continue the quest together. The two end up crossing paths with The Red Bull and nearly meet defeat, but Schmendrick transforms The Unicorn into a human woman to save her from the terrors of the bull. When they later arrive at a castle, the now-human Unicorn is beginning to forget her true identity and falls in love with a prince named Lir. The prince eventually learns of The Unicorn’s true self, and he also discovers how desperately he’ll need The Unicorn’s help as the final confrontation with The Red Bull reaches its thrilling climax.

Based on the novel by Hugo Award-winning fantasy author Peter S Beagle (who also wrote the screenplay), and featuring the voice talents of A-list stars of the era including Mia Farrow, Alan Arkin, and Jeff Bridges, The Last Unicorn is an amazing journey through fantasy and myth artfully rendered by a production studio that raised the bar for animated feature films throughout the 1970s and 80s. It is unquestionable a classic of the fantasy genre – a wonderful movie that deserves to be remembered as a touchstone in the history of hand-drawn movie-making.

THE BOY AND THE HERON (English Dubbed): Last Day Thursday, February 8th

Watch Trailer Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Cast: Voices by: Robert Pattinson, Karen Fukuhara, Gemma Chan, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Florence Pugh, Willem Dafoe, Dave Bautista

About the film

Set during WWII, THE BOY AND THE HERON tells the story of Mahito Maki, a young boy who loses his mother and is evacuated with his father from the city to the country to escape the ravages of war. Mahito, burdened by grief and struggling to adjust to his new surroundings, finds himself pestered by a grey heron. While pursuing the bird, Mahito is led to a strange stone tower where he discovers that the structure and the bird are gateways to a world beyond his imagination.

Having announced retirement almost a decade ago, Hayao Miyazaki instead persevered and began storyboarding THE BOY AND THE HERON in 2016 — it seemed that he had one final, fantastic story to tell. In production for nearly seven years and, allegedly, the most expensive film ever made in Japan, Miyazaki’s latest (and last) film has been hailed by critics as a masterpiece of animation filled with characters and themes that exemplify the breadth of Miyazaki’s illustrious career as one of the greatest animators and storytellers in the entertainment industry.
