For Shirin (Desiree Akhavan), being part of a perfect Persian family isn’t easy. Acceptance eludes her from all sides: her family doesn’t know she’s bisexual, and her ex-girlfriend, Maxine, can’t understand why she doesn’t tell them. Even the six-year-old boys in her moviemaking class are too ADD to focus on her for more than a second. Following a family announcement of her brother’s betrothal to a parentally approved Iranian prize catch, Shirin embarks on a private rebellion involving a series of pansexual escapades, while trying to decipher what went wrong with Maxine.

The duo hit the streets where they encounter bargain-hunting housewives, double-dealing conservative women, husky-voiced seductresses, mumbling erotic accessory salesmen and shopaholic swingers. Navigating the bizarre fetishes and sexual needs of their “dates” brings into focus the hilarious and pathetic disparity between the two hookers, as fellow travelers who will share the road together but only for a while.

Moms Weekend: GREY GARDENS

Grey Gardens is a fabled home located in the elite seaside Village of East Hampton, Long Island.  Of course, Grey Gardens is also a landmark documentary, a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and an HBO movie starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. Most importantly, Grey Gardens is a breathtaking and alluring portrait of Edith Beale and her daughter Edie.
In April, the spotlight will shine back on the Edies, when Grey Gardens (the original 1970s documentary, not the Drew Barrymore remake) returns to theaters. America’s favorite high-society dropouts even got a makeover for the occasion—a “striking new 2K restoration [has been] made by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with the Academy Film Archive at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences”. The Athena Cinema will feature a special 2 day run of the cult classic documentary for OHIO Moms Weekend.

If you’ve somehow managed to never catch Albert and David Maysles’s cult classic, this is a good opportunity to take in all of its beautiful weirdness on the big screen. The doc offers a very intimate look into the lives of Edith “Big Edie” Ewing Bouvier Beale and Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale (and cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis), as they live surrounded by the detritus of their past in a decaying East Hampton mansion, Grey Gardens.
