Sustainability Series: WE ARE NOT GHOSTS

Viewing: June 14,2024

Watch Trailer Director: Mark Dworkin and Melissa Young

Playing one night only as part of the Common Experience Project on Sustainability Series:
Wednesday, October 2nd at 7:00
Panel and audience discussion to follow screening

Fifty years ago Detroit was booming with two million people living the American Dream. Then the auto industry crashed and so did the Motor City. Most moved away; whole neighborhoods turned into wastelands. The film explores the community resilience movement in Detroit. WE ARE NOT GHOSTS tells the stories: from community businesses, to place-based schools, to thriving urban gardens and spoken word artists.

The film presents a compelling vision for the transformation of contemporary American Society: building new forms of community and cooperation from below in ways that demonstrate that ‘another world is possible.

“In an era which persists in treating cities as disposable, We Are Not Ghosts forcefully reminds us that people are not. Without glossing over the problems facing the people of Detroit, the film paints a collective portrait of surprisingly resilient urban communities, engaged in the inspiring work of inventing a life together in the wake of deindustrialization.”

Dr. Gar Alperovitz, Professor of Political Economy, Co-founder of The Democracy Collaborative, University of Maryland, Author, America Beyond Capitalism

“This film is a testament to the human spirit. It’s a narrative of perseverance, creativity and innovation as Detroiters build sustainable and healthy communities in the face of long-term deindustrialization and the acute shock of the foreclosure crisis. We Are Not Ghosts has important lessons for scholars, policy makers and practitioners interested in rebuilding our distressed urban landscape.”

Dr. Derek Hyra, Associate Professor of Urban Affairs, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Author, The New Urban Renewal: The Economic Transformation of Harlem and Bronzeville

“A compelling documentation of an unparalleled time in American history. Through stories of struggle and strength, loss and love, We Are Not Ghosts captures the possibilities and transformative power of grassroots, community organizing efforts.”

Rebekah Farrugia, Assistant Professor of Communication, Oakland University

We Are Not Ghosts presents a compelling vision for the transformation of contemporary American Society: building new forms of community and cooperation from below in ways that demonstrate that ‘another world is possible.'”

Erik Olin Wright, Professor of Sociology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, President, American Sociological Association, Author, Envisioning Real Utopias

Sustainability Series: BIDDER 70

Watch Trailer Director: Beth Gage, George Gage
Writer(s): Beth Gage

Playing one night only as part of the Common Experience Project on Sustainability Series:
Wednesday, October 16th at 7:00
Panel and audience discussion to follow screening

In 2008, as George W. Bush tried to gift the energy and mining industries thousands of acres of pristine Utah wilderness via a widely disputed federal auction, college student Tim DeChristopher decided to monkey-wrench the process. Bidding $1.7 million, he won 22,000 acres with no intention to drill. For this astonishing (and successful) act of civil disobedience he was sent to federal prison. Beth and George Gage’s new documentary BIDDER 70 tells the story of this peaceful warrior whose patriotism and willingness to sacrifice have ignited the climate justice movement. This is a powerful film that will inspire students to question their commitment to the world and to fight against global injustices.

20 Feet From Stardom

Watch Trailer Director: Morgan Neville
Cast: Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill, Mick Jagger, Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder
Awards: Nominated for Sundance Grand Jury Prize, Winner of multiple festival awards for Best Documentary

Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling new film 20 FEET FROM STARDOM, award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take center stage in the film.

Rich, insightful, and occasionally heartbreaking, 20 Feet From Stardom is an energetic tribute to the passion, talent, and hard work of backup singers.
