Let’s Do Lynch: ERASERHEAD

Viewing: March 18,2025

Watch Trailer Cast: Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart

Join us Tuesday, March 18th at 7:00 p.m. as we finish off Let’s Do Lynch: A David Lynch Retrospective with the film that started it all!

Admission $8

About the film

Undoubtedly one of the strangest feature films of all time, Eraserhead follows main character Henry Spencer through a hellish industrial landscape to tell the surreal story of how he ends up having to care for the grotesque child given birth to by his girlfriend Mary.

The film’s luscious black-and-white cinematography, its unsettling sound design (created by Lynch), and its incredibly unforgettable imagery make it one of the most unique films of all time…It is PURE David Lynch! Gravely misunderstood at the time of its release in 1977, Eraserhead has since become a highly regarded touchstone in cinema history — supposedly, Stanley Kubrick told Lynch it was his favorite movie.  In 2004, it was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry for its cultural significance and artistic impact.

From the Hills and Hollers: NORMA RAE with Dr. Rachel Terman

Viewing: April 17,2025

Watch Trailer Director: Martin Ritt
Cast: Sally Field, Ron Leibman, Beau Bridges
Awards: Oscar - Best Actress, Best Picture (nom)

The film that garnered Sally Field her first Academy Award for Best Actress, Norma Rae tells the story of a textile worker who gets fed up with the terrible working conditions in her factory and the toll they have taken on her and her family. She begins to learn more about the labor movement and meets some union organizers, and, eventually, Norma finds herself at the heart of a clash between the factory’s management and a group of pro-union workers who intend to fight for better wages and treatment.

Directed by Martin Ritt (Hud, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold), and starring Beau Bridges, Ron Leibman, and Pat Hingle, this film was nominated for four Oscars – including Best Picture – upon its release in 1979. The story is largely based on the life Crystal Lee Sutton who was fired from her textile factory job for insubordination as a result of her attempts to organize a union among the factory’s workers.

About the Speaker

Dr. Rachel Terman is Eric A. Wagner Associate Professor of Sociology at Ohio University and affiliate faculty with the Appalachian Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies programs. She will introduce the film by discussing the connections among Appalachia, gender, and labor in a historical and current context.

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON: Last Day Wednesday, January 10th

Watch Trailer Director: Martin Scorsese
Writer(s): Eric Roth
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemmons, Lily Gladstone

About the Film

When a spate of mysterious murders sweeps through the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma in the early 1920’s, the Bureau of Investigation (an early 20th-century precursor to the FBI) sends agents into the frontier to investigate the matter. The murders coincide with the discovery of massive oil deposits on the Osage land, and the murders seem to be tied to the newfound wealth that begins to permeate the once-poverty-stricken tribespeople.

With its perfect genre blend of drama, Western, and crime noir, Martin Scorsese’s KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is the highly-anticipated adaptation of the critically-acclaimed 2017 non-fiction book of the same name. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemmons, and Lily Gladstone.

The Athena is now open!

We have been closed since May to address some structural repairs with our building. The Athena opened in 1915 and these repairs were necessary to keep the theater thriving for years to come.

This will be a partial reopening. We will be showing films in our upstairs theater starting on Jan 5th. The two downstairs theaters will remain closed as work continues in those spaces. Those theaters are anticipated to reopen in a few months.

We are so delighted to bring film back to Court Street! Thank you to our amazing community for your patience and support during the closure.

First up, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON & ANATOMY OF A FALL. These will be very limited engagements so don’t wait to see them. Buy your tickets now. We only have access to one screen right now, so we are trying to fit as much cinema goodness in as possible. This means films that will have fewer show times. But this schedule will allow us to highlight more of best independent, world and critically acclaimed films coming out in 2023-2024!

See you at the movies!
