About the film

T’Challa, prince of the hidden nation of Wakanda, must return to his homeland in the wake of his father’s death to assume the throne and take up the mantle of the “Black Panther”. Killmonger, a rival from another tribe, also returns, seeking to take the throne for himself and reveal Wakanda’s advanced technological secrets to the world at-large.

Starring the late-great Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan, BLACK PANTHER won three Academy Awards and was the first superhero film to win an Oscar for Best Picture. It is the unquestionable jewel in the crown of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

About the film

Set during WWII, THE BOY AND THE HERON tells the story of Mahito Maki, a young boy who loses his mother and is evacuated with his father from the city to the country to escape the ravages of war. Mahito, burdened by grief and struggling to adjust to his new surroundings, finds himself pestered by a grey heron. While pursuing the bird, Mahito is led to a strange stone tower where he discovers that the structure and the bird are gateways to a world beyond his imagination.

Having announced retirement almost a decade ago, Hayao Miyazaki instead persevered and began storyboarding THE BOY AND THE HERON in 2016 — it seemed that he had one final, fantastic story to tell. In production for nearly seven years and, allegedly, the most expensive film ever made in Japan, Miyazaki’s latest (and last) film has been hailed by critics as a masterpiece of animation filled with characters and themes that exemplify the breadth of Miyazaki’s illustrious career as one of the greatest animators and storytellers in the entertainment industry.

While deeply situated in the communities under the reign of King Coal, where McMillion Sheldon has lived and worked her entire life, the film transcends time and place, emphasizing the ways in which all are connected through an immersive mosaic of belonging, ritual, and imagination. Emerging from the long shadows of the coal mines, KING COAL untangles the pain from the beauty, and illuminates the innately human capacity for change. About the director/speaker

Elaine McMillion Sheldon (Director / Producer / Co-Editor) is an Academy Award-nominated, and Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker. Sheldon is the director of two Netflix Original Documentaries – HEROIN(E) and RECOVERY BOYS – that explore America’s opioid crisis. She has been named a Creative Capital Awardee, Guggenheim Fellow, a USA Fellow by United States Artists, and one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film,” by Filmmaker Magazine. Her latest film, KING COAL, premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

McMillion Sheldon was raised in West Virginia and lives in Knoxville, Tennessee.

About the series

Due to the resounding success of the series launch during 2022-2023, we are thrilled to present the 2nd annual From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Film Series for 2023-2024.

The series seeks to foster a deeper connection between the Athens city and university communities and the cultural legacy of the surrounding region through films that examine the many facets, both positive and negative, of life in Appalachia. This batch of films is, in large part, the product of filmmakers who have intimate knowledge of living in this environment and, as a result, are well-suited for representing the realities of Appalachia on the big screen.

Short introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission.

This screening will take place at the Athena Cinema located at 20 S. Court St.

About the Film

When young Joe Buck decides to leave Texas (and his inhibitions) behind, he heads east to the Big Apple with plans to make his way in the world as a gigolo. However, his naiveté is soon evident as he learns what it means for “the hustler to get hustled”. Things start looking up, however, when he meets the nearly-homeless con man “Ratso” Rizzo who takes Joe under his wing and shows him the big city ropes. The two form a bond and do their best to survive the tough streets of 1960s New York.

John Schlesinger’s classic 1969 film is considered to be one of the best films in cinema history. The on-screen chemistry between stars Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman is undeniable, and the two deliver timeless performances that are still studied and discussed half-a-century later.

The Met: Live in HD: Bizet’s CARMEN

Acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell brings a vital new production of one of opera’s most enduringly powerful works, reinvigorating the classic story with a staging that moves the action to the modern day and finds at the heart of the drama issues that could not be more relevant today: gendered violence, abusive labor structures, and the desire to break through societal boundaries. Dazzling young mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina leads a powerhouse quartet of stars in the complex and volatile title role, alongside tenor Piotr Beczała as Carmen’s troubled lover Don José, soprano Angel Blue as the loyal Micaëla, and bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen as the swaggering Escamillo. Daniele Rustioni conducts Bizet’s heart-pounding score.

Due to the current repairs going on at the Athena Cinema, this program will be presented as a pre-recorded encore at the Ridges Auditorium. This screening starts at 12:55pm and is estimated to end at 4:39pm.

CASSANDRO

Set in the 1980’s, Cassandro is a true-to-life dramatic account of Saúl Armendáriz, a gay man from El Paso, Texas who embarks on a career as a professional wrestler. Eventually, he opts to cross the border into Juárez where he becomes part of the “lucha libre” scene – Mexico’s unique style of high-flying, no-holds-barred wrestling. When he meets new trainer Sabrina, she compels him to let his flamboyant flag fly by performing as an “exótico”, a type of luchador known for wrestling in drag and adopting a sassy and undignified demeanor in the ring. Once Armendáriz fully embraces his new persona as Cassandro, his star begins to rise and he becomes a champion.

In his first departure from documentary filmmaking, Cassandro was written and directed by Roger Ross Williams, the first African-American director to win an Academy Award. This film stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Roberta Colindrez, and Bad Bunny.

Based on Nyad’s own biography, the film is the latest offering from directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, the Husband-and-wife filmmaking duo responsible for the exquisite mountain-climbing film Free Solo.
