Athena Awarded Multiple Art House America Campaign Grants
The College of Fine Arts is excited to announce that the Athena Cinema has received two grants from the Art House America Campaign that helps independent cinemas during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Art House America Campaign was made possible thanks to both art-house cinema fans and filmmakers. Starting on GoFundMe, the campaign received initial support from film-restoration companies the Criterion Collection and Janus Films. The Fundraising team includes indie auteurs Sofia Coppola, John Waters, Barry Jenkins and Wes Anderson, among others. The campaign provided financial relief to independent cinemas across the country and received a total $842,088 in donations.
The Athena was one of over 150 independent theaters nationwide that temporarily closed to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The Athena was awarded a $2,500 Art House America Campaign emergency grant. In light of the campaign’s success, the campaign awarded the Athena a second grant of $2,735. The grants will assist the Athena with essential costs during the pandemic.
As Christopher Nolan wrote in the Washington Post, “When this crisis passes, the need for collective human engagement, the need to live and love and laugh and cry together, will be more powerful than ever.”
The Athena Cinema staff looks forward to serving the public when it is safe to reopen. A date for reopen has not yet been set.

2020 Marquee Restoration
You may have noticed the work being done to restore our beautiful, art deco marquee. Its renovation is thanks to the generous support of the Weymouth Family in honor of their son, Tyler Weymouth.
We were lucky enough to get to know Tyler when he was a projectionist at the Athena during his time as an OHIO student. We look forward to the day when Tyler’s family and friends can visit to see the restored marquee in person.
Until then we send them a HUGE thank you.

About the film
Filmed in the verdant jungles of the Amazon (Ecuador and Peru), the brightly colored cultures of the Pan American First Nations communities (Vancouver, Alberta) and the United States Indian tribes (Oklahoma), viewers glimpse extraordinary beauty in the places, faces and regalia of traditional people.
The Indigenous heartfelt pursuit for self- discovery, self- reclamation, and a way of life, is chronicled as they build alliances around the world (in Peru, Ecuador, Paris, Vancouver, Alberta, Washington, New York, etc.) because to them a crime against Mother Earth is a crime against humanity.
The Condor & The Eagle follows the protagonists as they develop a resistance strategy that matches the level of their opponents – taking their effort to South America, Europe and beyond. Their task is to make local battles an International concern and finally expose criminal corporations responsible for serious crimes. The film promotes an intercultural dialogue by showing how non-Indigenous and Indigenous people come together.

“These young people are saying we all have a right to know what is in the air we breathe, in the water we drink, and the food we eat. It is our responsibility to leave this planet cleaner and greener. That must be our legacy.”
— Representative John Lewis on youth climate activists, September 2019
The fall screenings highlight new releases and classic films that explore diverse topics with the central theme of racial and social justice. We choose films that engage and challenge the audience to integrate the information from these stories into their everyday life, as well as delve into solutions. Through the series we aim to bring together students, faculty and regional community members. The program recognizes the strength of this integration, coming together and learning from each other.

About the film
Mossville, Louisiana: A once-thriving community founded by formerly enslaved and free people of color, and an economically flourishing safe haven for generations of African American families. Today it’s a breeding ground for petrochemical plants and their toxic black clouds. Many residents are forced from their homes, and those that stay suffer from prolonged exposure to contamination and pollution. Amid this chaos and injustice stands one man who refuses to abandon his family’s land – and his community.

Ultimately the goal of The Fight [is]... to show that the organization’s work, and the work of countless others who litigate on behalf of civil and human rights, is never open-and-shut. It’s an uphill battle, one worth fighting but without any guarantee of winning. Still, people do it — and The Fight shows why.

Unafraid to turn into a true phantasmagoria, Garai's filmmaking hints at a director whose tastes skew away from your typical horror movie construction.

I went into the film knowing nothing about the Cantopop star, and came away from it as an instant fan rejuvenated by my connection to every soul throughout the world currently fighting to preserve human rights against the rising tide of totalitarianism.
