Phillip Vandarploeug is an American actor living a lonely life in Tokyo. He has recently started working for a Japanese rental family service — a job whereby actors are hired to serve as stand-in roles in the lives of other people so as to give those people the desirable public image of having friends and families. As Phillip delves deeper into this new career path, he discovers that he may have found the cure for his own loneliness as he forms bonds with and shares in the joys of one of his family clients.
