In this new science-fiction drama from award-winning writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda, architect Otone and her carpenter husband Kensuke are grieving the loss of a child. The couple move beyond their period of mourning by deciding to adopt Kakeru, an android child, and welcome him into their home. Otone embraces the new boy in contrast to Kensuke’s skepticism. As the robot settles into its newfound family and remarkably begins to develop a “soul”, the domestic dynamic evolves in tandem.
