NO OTHER LAND

Watch Trailer Director: Basel Adra, Yuval Abraham
Awards: Oscar - Best Documentary Feature Film

Winner of the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film, No Other Land is a collaborative effort between Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers to provide insight into the conflict between the two nations and the impact it is having on the quality of life in the region. Using footage gathered over the course of four years (2019-2023), the film follows Basel Adra, a young Palestinian activist, who witnesses the daily degradation of his homeland on the West Bank and the displacement of its residents at the hands of the Israeli military. When Adra befriends Yuval Abraham, an Israeli journalist, the two join forces to document the tragic undoing of small Palestinian settlements. The friendship and collaboration, however, are put to the test by the fact that both men, though geographic neighbors, come from completely worlds.

THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG

Watch Trailer Director: Mohammad Rasoulof
Cast: Soheila Golestani, Missagh Zareh, Mahsa Rostami, Setareh Maleki

When Iman, a devout lawyer with a strong moral compass, gets promoted as a judge to Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Court, he looks forward to the opportunity to move up in the world. However, political unrest in Iran erupts with citizens protesting the human rights violations of the nation’s government. Iman, thus, finds himself in the unenviable position of having to kowtow to the state by anonymously passing judgement (often without a fair trial) on people accused of crimes against the Republic – often sentencing hundreds of people a day to death. Moreover, a handgun given to Iman by the state for his protection goes missing under mysterious circumstances and results in the slaying of a protester. Iman suspects a family member, sympathetic to the protesters, of the crime. As the unrest intensifies, Iman’s anonymity is undermined when his identity is leaked on social media. He decides to flee Tehran with his family. When they reach safety, Iman puts his own family on trial, hoping to clear his name; however, he may instead end up destroying the last thread of stability in his unravelling life.

Written and directed by Mohammad Rasoulof, The Seed of The Sacred Fig is a critically-acclaimed drama about how keeping secrets from those you love can be the most destructive decision one can make in one’s life. The film has been nominated for several prestigious awards, including an Oscar for Best International Feature, a Palm d’Or at Cannes, and a Golden Globe for Best Picture.

SEPTEMBER 5

Watch Trailer Director: Tim Fehlbaum
Cast: Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, Leonie Benesch

From award-winning Swiss filmmaker Tim Fehlbaum comes an immersive film that chronicles the terrifying events surrounding the 1972 terrorist attack during the Summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany, as witnessed by the eyes and cameras of the ABC Sports crew that were on hand to provide coverage of the games. By incorporating archival footage of the actual events, as well as using a strong ensemble cast, September 5 is a thrilling dramatic retelling of how the ABC crew found itself at the heart of an ultimately violent and bloody international incident as it became aware that the Palestinian group Black September, a militant faction of the PLO, had infiltrated the quarters of the Israeli Olympic team before dawn and had taken several of the athletes hostage in order to create leverage to secure the release of Palestinian political prisoners. Navigating conflicting reports and dealing with the pressures imposed by law enforcement and the military organizations responsible for rescuing the hostages, this film tells a story about a team of journalists who did what they could to get the story right.

This is amusing stuff, well served by Coogan’s knack for haughty composure in the face of the absurd.

THE SHROUDS – Last Day: Thursday, May 8th

Watch Trailer Director: David Cronenberg
Cast: Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pierce

After the death of his wife, visionary entrepreneur Karsh, as a way to soothe his deep grief, creates an innovative (and controversial) technology that provides him with a means to monitor and stay connected with his wife’s corpse which has now been interred in her grave – a shroud comprised of hi-tech components that allows the living to watch the body of the deceased as it decomposes. When the cemetery where her body lies is vandalized, Karsh vows to find the culprits and make them atone for their transgression.

From critically-acclaimed Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg, considered a master of the “body horror” genre due to the success of films like Scanners, Videodrome, and The Fly, The Shrouds is an eerie and thought-provoking examination of the obsession with life, death, and grief.
