PAVEMENTS

Watch Trailer Director: Alex Ross Perry
Cast: Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, Scott Kannberg, Mark Ibold, Steve West, Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker, Michael Esper

Blending spoof-y satire and earnest documentary filmmaking, Alex Ross Perry takes us into the world of one of the most revered indie rock bands of all time…Pavement! By combining threads from Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical — a “jukebox musical” featuring songs from the band’s discography that tells the story of a young musician who travels to New York and falls in-and-out of love — with documentary footage of band members Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, Scott Kannberg, Steve West, and Mark Ibold, Pavements is a music biopic unlike anything you’ve ever seen…the perfect tribute to a band whose music broke new ground when they hit the scene in the 90’s and reshaped alternative rock as we know it.

In addition to the band members, this unique and experimental film also stars, among others, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker, Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Michael Esper, and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.

Though Pavement is the star and the performers in its orbit are all in supporting roles, “Pavements” is distinguished by cinematic artistry that’s as distinctive as it is personal. “Range Life” may be a Pavement story, but “Pavements” is a Perry film.

F1

Watch Trailer Director: Joseph Kosinski
Cast: Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, Shea Wigham, Kerry Condon

Brad Pitt stars in a fast-paced new film from Joseph Kosinski, award-winning director of action-dramas like Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and Top Gun: Maverick!

Pitt plays the role of “Sonny Hayes”, an ex-Formula One racer — and considered to be the next legend of the sport — who was forced to retire from the sport after a near-lethal crash. Hayes has kept his racing career alive by participating in lesser racing disciplines and is eventually approached by a friend and F1 team owner about the possibility of mentoring a new rookie F1 driver (played by Damson Idris) as a means to save a failing franchise. Hayes accepts and again has an opportunity to prove he’s the best-of-the-best; however, his rookie teammate’s competitive nature creates more than one obstacle to overcome before both of them reach the finish line.

With a supporting cast that includes Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, Shea Wigham, and a host of real-life F1 drivers, this Jerry Bruckheimer-produced edge-of-your-seat drama promises solid action fused with stellar performances.

PERFECT DAYS: Last Day Tuesday, March 19th

Watch Trailer Director: Wim Wenders
Cast: Koji Yakusho, Tokio Emoto, Arisa Nakano
Awards: Best Actor, Palm d'Or (nom) - Cannes Film Festival; Best Int'l Feature Film (nom) - Oscars
Language: Japanese

Hirayama leads an unglamorous life as a Tokyo toilet cleaner, though he has found contentment in the simpler things like collecting classic rock cassettes, reading books, and photographing trees. His days have a Zen-like structure, ritually arising at dawn, going about his work, and devoting time to his pleasurable pursuits. This approach to life has not resulted in success as measured by the modern world, but it has given him wisdom and insight into what is truly important about Life. Things begin to change, however, as external events begin to have an impact on his sphere of contentment. Will his life unravel, or will he be able to wield his hard-won wisdom and impart it to the people who have come along to shake up his peaceful little world..?

From legendary director Wim Wenders, this latest film is a perfect slice of peace in these tumultuous times. Japanese actor Koji Yokusho (who has won the Best Actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival) stars in the lead role alongside Tokio Emoto and Arisa Nakano. Perfect Days has been nominated for a Best International Feature Film Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards, and will surely be an unforgettable addition to Wender’s illustrious cinematic career.

AMERICAN FICTION: Last Day Thursday, March 7th

Watch Trailer Director: Cord Jefferson
Cast: Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Sterling K Brown

Jeffrey Wright stars as Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a struggling writer who decides half-jokingly to write a book that leans heavily into “Black” stereotypes to appease his publishing company (but, also, a little out of spite). The book, however, becomes an unexpected critical and financial success, and Ellison is faced with dealing with the fame and fallout from his underhanded act.

A smart and sharp comedy, AMERICAN FICTION has been highly praised by critics and is considered by many to be Jeffrey Wright’s finest performance in a career full of stellar roles. Featuring a fantastic supporting cast that includes Tracee Ellis Ross, Sterling K Brown, and John Ortiz, AMERICAN FICTION has not only won numerous awards on the independent film festival circuit, but has also been nominated for Best Picture by both the Golden Globes and The Critic’s Choice awards councils.

LOVE LIES BLEEDING: Last Day Sunday, April 7th

Watch Trailer Director: Rose Glass
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Katy, O'Brian, Ed Harris, Dave Franco

Kristen Stewart stars as “Lou”, a small town gym owner who’s trying to toe the straight-and-narrow and get out from under the shadow of her family’s criminal tendencies. When up-and-coming bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brian) passes through on her way to a big competition in Las Vegas, Lou falls hard for her and the two begin a passionate love affair. The flames of passion, however, end up kindling a bigger inferno that ultimately engulfs them in a wildfire of revenge.

From A24 Studios, Love Lies Bleeding is a steamy, edgy romantic thriller that could have been pulled from the pages of an old pulp novel. This sophomore effort from British filmmaker Rose Glass (Saint Maud) also features a tour-de-force performance from Ed Harris as Lou’s father/nemesis “Lou Sr.”

From the Hills and Hollers: OCTOBER SKY with Dr. Amy Wolfe

Watch Trailer Director: Joe Johnston
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Laura Dern

About the film

Based on the memoir Rocket Boys by American engineer Homer H. Hickman Jr., the film tells the story of four young men who, while growing up in the coal fields of rural West Virginia in the late-1950s, witness the world-shaking launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite and are inspired to start building rockets of their own, seeking a path to the stars instead of succumbing to the well-tread paths that would lead them down into the coal mines.

About the series

Due to the resounding success of the series launch during 2022-2023, we are thrilled to present the 2nd annual From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Film Series for 2023-2024.

The series seeks to foster a deeper connection between the Athens city and university communities and the cultural legacy of the surrounding region through films that examine the many facets, both positive and negative, of life in Appalachia. This batch of films is, in large part, the product of filmmakers who have intimate knowledge of living in this environment and, as a result, are well-suited for representing the realities of Appalachia on the big screen.

Short introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission.

This screening will take place at the Athena Cinema located at 20 S. Court St.

This series is sponsored by the College of Health Sciences and Professions, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences, OHIO Honors Program, Center for Campus and Community Engagement, Athens County Public Libraries, University Libraries, GO Local, University College, the Center for Law, Justice, and Culture, and the Ohio Arts Council.
