Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) were once close friends when they were employed at the same magazine many years ago. As is often the case with friends, career trajectories, personal goals, and other life circumstances caused them to drift apart. However, a chance encounter puts the women back in touch with one another, and Ingrid learns that Martha is dying from terminal cancer. As they reconnect, they decide to move from the city to the quiet countryside where their newfound friendship can bloom again as they share the meaningful moments from the past, present, and future of their lives. Martha desires to end her own life before the cancer can take it from her, and Ingrid does what any true friend would do — offer support.
