About the event
William T. Vollmann will be discussing his new novel A Table for Fortune. From the balcony-level of history, Vollmann depicts the last half-century of American politics, war, and life. A Table for Fortune is a staggeringly well-researched, definititve history of Aerican post-war foreign policy with a deft, moving chronicle of a family’s descent into resentment and gloom. At once a family drama, coming-of-age, and national epic, this 3000+ page, four-part novel may be William T. Vollmann’s most ambitious work.
About the author
William T. Vollmann is one of contemporary literature’s most fearless and prolific voices, the author of nearly two dozen books spanning journalism, fiction, and history. Renowned for immersing himself in extreme circumstances – running with Afghan mujahadeen, surviving alone in the Arctic, reporting from Fukushima’s radiation zones – he pairs journalistic immediacy with profound moral inquiry, earning comparisons to Pynchon and Hunter S. Thompson.
His novel Europe Central won the National Book Award for Fiction; other major works include the environmental treatise Carbon Ideologies, as well as Rising Up and Rising Down: Some Thoughts on Violence, Freedom, and Urgent Means, and The Lucky Star, part of his “Transgender Trilogy.”
Vollmann was born in Santa Monica in 1959, educated at Cornell, and lives in Sacramento.
