On the outskirts of a seaside town lives The Fisherwoman (played by Olivia Coleman). Derided for her smelling of her profession, and unmarried, she experiences constant ridicule from her neighbors. One day, however, The Fisherwoman becomes fed up with the snooty, judgmental, and small-minded residents and commissions The Master Weave of the town to create for a Wicker Husband (played by Aleksander Skarsgård) so she can at least get people to stop chiding her for being a spinster. The romance that develops between the two newly-introduced lovers is, though very strange, one of purity, loyalty, and tenderness which soon sparks ire, jealousy, and chaos in this medieval town where conservative values hold sway among the population.
