WOLF MAN

Watch Trailer Director: Leigh Whannell
Cast: Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner

Thanks to films like Nosferatu, Robert Eggers’ latest smash-hit reboot of the Dracula story, the golden age of horror is having a comeback — Hollywood would now like to (re)introduce you to the Wolf Man!

When a family man learns of his father’s mysterious disappearance (and presumed death) and ends up inherits his childhood home, he relocates with his wife and child from California to Oregon to start a new life. Shortly after moving in, however, he is attacked by a werewolf during a full moon. Although he was successfully able to protect his family, he begins to change into something bestial that will truly threaten their safety.

Written and directed by Leigh Whannell (Saw, Insidious, The Invisible Man), Wolf Man promises to continue the tradition of great “monster movies” and spark a whole new generation of fans for this classic genre.

THE FRIEND

Watch Trailer Director: Scott McGhee, David Siegel
Cast: Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, Constance Wu, Ann Dowd

Naomi Watts stars as Iris, a teacher and writer living alone-yet-content in New York. When Walter, her dear friend and mentor (played by Bill Murray) dies unexpectedly, she suddenly finds herself the new guardian of Apollo, Walter’s massive Great Dane. As she struggles with her grief at losing an important person in her life, the dog, at first, is a lot to handle beyond its size – the beast is temperamental, unwieldy, and impractical; not to mention the fact that he’s a constant reminder of the hole Walter has left in her life. However, as time goes on, Iris’ bond with Apollo becomes stronger and their new relationship becomes a catalyst for moving forward in her own life.
The Friend is based on the National Book Award-winning novel by Sigrid Nunez.

Awards: Best Actor, Palm d'Or (nom) - Cannes Film Festival; Best Int'l Feature Film (nom) - Oscars
Language: Japanese

Hirayama leads an unglamorous life as a Tokyo toilet cleaner, though he has found contentment in the simpler things like collecting classic rock cassettes, reading books, and photographing trees. His days have a Zen-like structure, ritually arising at dawn, going about his work, and devoting time to his pleasurable pursuits. This approach to life has not resulted in success as measured by the modern world, but it has given him wisdom and insight into what is truly important about Life. Things begin to change, however, as external events begin to have an impact on his sphere of contentment. Will his life unravel, or will he be able to wield his hard-won wisdom and impart it to the people who have come along to shake up his peaceful little world..?

From legendary director Wim Wenders, this latest film is a perfect slice of peace in these tumultuous times. Japanese actor Koji Yokusho (who has won the Best Actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival) stars in the lead role alongside Tokio Emoto and Arisa Nakano. THE TASTE OF THINGS: Last Day Wednesday, March 20th

Watch Trailer Director: Trần Anh Hùng
Writer(s): Trần Anh Hùng
Cast: Juliette Binoche, Benoît Magimel
Awards: Cannes Film Festival - Best Director, Palm d'Or (nominated)

About the Film

Eugénie and Dodin have paired their skills in the kitchen for 20 years. During that time, working closely together and relying on each another, they’ve not only prepared meals of exquisite quality but have also kindled feelings for one another. Eugénie enjoys her freedom, however, and has done her best to keep Dodin at arms length…that is, until Dodin finally cooks her a meal that she cannot resist.

Academy Award-winning actress Juliette Binoche stars opposite Benoît Magimel (Binoche’s one-time partner in real life) in this deliciously romantic period-piece set in France in the 1880’s. THE TASTE OF THINGS is a love letter to food and to love — the kind of film that is a feast for the eyes and mouth-wateringly charming.

OU School of Film

With its rich tradition of fostering the development of young filmmakers and cultivating a deep love for the artform of cinema, Ohio University’s School of Film continues in its mission of immersing students in the study of film concepts to further educate them about the role film plays as a dynamic cultural force and an expressive means of storytelling.

While its one thing to learn about film in the classroom and in hands-on filmmaking exercises, its another thing entirely to be able to see your finished product on the actual “big screen”. That’s where we come in! The Athena is proud to coordinate with the faculty and student body of the School of Film to regularly showcase the work of students from both the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs each semester.

These screenings are often well-attended by SoF faculty, students, and their families; however, we strongly encourage the community to join us in taking part in celebrating the hard work and sheer creative joy that these nascent films convey. Chances are you’ll someday see the names of these budding young artists in the credits of your favorite feature film!

AMERICAN FICTION: Last Day Thursday, March 7th

Watch Trailer Director: Cord Jefferson
Cast: Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Sterling K Brown

Jeffrey Wright stars as Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a struggling writer who decides half-jokingly to write a book that leans heavily into “Black” stereotypes to appease his publishing company (but, also, a little out of spite). The book, however, becomes an unexpected critical and financial success, and Ellison is faced with dealing with the fame and fallout from his underhanded act.

A smart and sharp comedy, AMERICAN FICTION has been highly praised by critics and is considered by many to be Jeffrey Wright’s finest performance in a career full of stellar roles. Featuring a fantastic supporting cast that includes Tracee Ellis Ross, Sterling K Brown, and John Ortiz, AMERICAN FICTION has not only won numerous awards on the independent film festival circuit, but has also been nominated for Best Picture by both the Golden Globes and The Critic’s Choice awards councils.

LOVE LIES BLEEDING: Last Day Sunday, April 7th

Watch Trailer Director: Rose Glass
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Katy, O'Brian, Ed Harris, Dave Franco

Kristen Stewart stars as “Lou”, a small town gym owner who’s trying to toe the straight-and-narrow and get out from under the shadow of her family’s criminal tendencies. When up-and-coming bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brian) passes through on her way to a big competition in Las Vegas, Lou falls hard for her and the two begin a passionate love affair. The flames of passion, however, end up kindling a bigger inferno that ultimately engulfs them in a wildfire of revenge.

From A24 Studios, Love Lies Bleeding is a steamy, edgy romantic thriller that could have been pulled from the pages of an old pulp novel. This sophomore effort from British filmmaker Rose Glass (Saint Maud) also features a tour-de-force performance from Ed Harris as Lou’s father/nemesis “Lou Sr.”

Love Lies Bleeding melds a greasy crime drama with a gritty love story, presenting a saga steeped in steroid-fueled rage, white trash aesthetics, and memorably bad haircuts.
