Sustainability Film Series

Athena Cinema, Office of Sustainability and the Environmental Studies Program are thrilled to present the 13th annual Sustainability Film Series!

At the heart of this series are films that present the challenges facing our world – topics as wide-ranging as climate change, economic hardship, natural resource management, and much more. We strive to present films that attempt to provide practical solutions to these imminent problems and embody an inspiring message to motivate audiences to action. In other words, viewers should walk away from each screening with a deeper understanding of the film’s topic, while also feeling compelled to get out into the world and make some positive change.

This year, each of our film screenings will feature guest speakers – many from the OU Environmental Studies Program itself – who will give a 15-20 minute introduction or interactive presentation prior to the start of the film. This pre-show activity is meant to engage the audience and offer important things to consider while watching the films.

All film screening events will start at 7:00 p.m.

The series is made possible thanks to the support of: University Libraries, Honors Tutorial College, Office of Sustainability, and The Voinovich School’s Environmental Studies Program.

Beat the Heat

Summer in Athens means the return of the Athena Cinema’s BEAT THE HEAT Series – a splendid showcase of children-and-family-friendly films to be held on Saturday afternoons! Get a break from the heat, enjoy the cool air conditioning, snack on delicious concessions, and revive the tradition of watching movies on the big screen. Everything from nostalgia-inducing family films to international animation, this series offers something “cool” for folks of all ages.

The purpose of this series, now in its 11th year, is to give back to children’s organizations in our area and to the greater Athens community as a whole. As a result, the admission price for each film event is simply a monetary donation to a designated children’s organization.

It’s our pleasure to provide this ultra-affordable source of entertainment during the summer, in addition to giving families an incentive to visit Uptown Athens/Court St and increase foot-traffic to local businesses during the lean months between semesters. We hope you’ll come out and support our initiative – Take advantage of local shopping and dining, ample parking, and a fun summer event with your friends and family!

This series is made possible thanks to support from the following sponsors: Athens County Children Services and OUCU Financial, and Ohio Arts Council
