About the film

In an isolated town in rural Florida, four teens experience the joys and heartbreaks of their last year in high school.

Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan paint a detailed and astonishing portrait of PAHOKEE, a rural village in the Everglades, Florida. Very close-knit, its inhabitants fight to face fragile financial situations and an uncertain future. Through a precise observational approach, the film captures the daily life of this city restoring a rich palette of nuances. From sporting events to beauty contests at school, the filmmakers explore social and community rituals, and how gender and identity are portrayed as new stories are created.

PAHOKEE is the powerful portrait of a forgotten America, absent from the current political discourse.

Virtual Screenings FAQ

 

What are virtual cinema screenings? Virtual cinema screenings are ticketed screenings of films unavailable on any other VOD platform that viewers can enjoy from the privacy of their own home.  Once a customer purchases a ticket they will receive access to a temporary film rental.

How can viewers enjoy a virtual screening? Audiences can buy tickets through their local art house cinema.

How does this support independent theaters? Virtual screenings allow theaters to keep programming films, even when their doors are closed. A portion of each ticket sale will go directly to the buyer’s local art house cinema.

I just purchased the film but I don’t see how to watch it? First, check your email and make sure your purchase went through. The email you were sent should have a link for you to access the film.

I’m an Athena Cinema member. Do you offer member pricing? Unfortunately, due to our arrangements with distributors, we aren’t able to offer member pricing for these films.

Can I use Athena Cinema gift cards for virtual screenings? Unfortunately, that’s not an option at the moment. You’ll be able to use them in-person for our showings at the theater.

Dear Friends,

We are all thinking about the future. How long will this go on? Will life go back to “normal”—or will there be a new normal?

Predictably, we are seeing a deluge of opinion pieces signaling the demise of the theatrical experience. All this home viewing, Netflix-watching and straight-to-streaming distribution is surely the end of movie theaters. Never mind the fact that we’ve been seeing that same story for decades, even though theater attendance has remained relatively stable since 1964 (the only significant dip in theater attendance was the introduction of the television from 1949-1964).  But since 1964 we’ve seen the introduction of cable TV, VCRs and DVD players, the digital conversion from 35 mm, the advent of streaming services and shorter theatrical windows—oh, and Moviepass. (Remember that?!). Each change in technology has been the harbinger of doom, yet the curtain rises on the other side.

I am convinced that there is one reason theaters survive, and more than that, thrive (we had three full-capacity events in our largest theater in the month before the pandemic). That reason is you. Our tremendous community. Our beloved regulars. How we miss you!

I was moved to tears by this love letter to the movies by Manohla Dargis and I wanted to share it. It reminded me how deeply I feel tied to the physical space of the Athena. And how much I treasure the ability to watch movies with you here.

We are being forced to quickly adapt or else face an uncertain future. Should we encourage patrons to stream art house content, even try to move to a new model where we get a cut of the “ticket” you buy to stream a film? Do we “go dark” and wait it out?

I am sifting through a lot of new and daily emerging possibilities and like all of us, trying to make the best decisions for our little corner of the world. I am not sure what the answers are but I do know that our team here is scrappy, tenacious and wildly committed. We are specialists at adapting to change and we remain focused. The Athena will be here on the other side of this thing.

I hope to see you at the movies.

Athena Cinema Coronavirus Update

Athena Cinema Supporters,

While there are no known cases of COVID-19 at Athena Cinema, Ohio University or in our region, out of caution and with particular concern for at-risk groups, Athena Cinema will be temporarily closing effective Monday, March 16th. All scheduled programming at this time is canceled.

This decision has been reached after much deliberation and in acknowledgement of the Athena’s role as a community arts center. Since 1915, the Athena has been able to serve our patrons through times of uncertainty by opening our doors to the community. This is a unique and different time. We feel closing is the best course of action to prioritize the health and safety of customers, staff, and the community at large, including vulnerable populations.

Throughout the closure, the Athena will continue to accept memberships and donations to our support fund. Please be aware that delivery of membership cards may be delayed. Your support is especially appreciated during this time.

If you would like to request a refund for a ticket purchase for an event that has been canceled, please reach out to us at 740.594.7382.

This page is to provide Athena Cinema patrons with information regarding the health and safety of our patrons in response to the recent concern around the global COVID-19 outbreak and how Athena Cinema is responding.

First, we will remain open and programming is continuing as planned. At this time the risk to the public is still consider low and theaters nationwide have remained open. we are monitoring the situation daily. We are monitoring information from Ohio University, local and state officials along with new information from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). There are currently no known cases of COVID-19 in our immediate region though we are acting with due diligence in protecting our staff, volunteers and patrons.

Here are some ways we’re working to keep the Athena Cinema community healthy:

1.       We will be working with Ohio University Facilities Management to ensure disinfecting and routine cleaning is being handled diligently and our staff is disinfecting between each round. For example disinfecting all railings, countertops, and other frequently-touched surfaces.

2.       We have reduced the capacity of our theaters to allow for an empty seat and distance between each patron.

3.       Our staff will be given checklist with instructions about wearing gloves, handwashing and other health safety protocol.

4.       We will be adding public-facing signage to our lobby about handwashing, hand sanitizing, and other public health recommendations for patrons and staff.

5.       We have put out hand sanitizer, tissues and alcohol wipes at the counter.

Here is how you can help:

  • Please stay home if you are not feeling well.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Where possible please keep a distance from other patrons and limit unnecessary contact.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and then throw the tissue in the trash. Then wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Please pick up your trash, especially any tissues or napkins.
