Exploring the Unknown

Dr. Daniel Hembree and Dr. Patrick O’Connor discussed exploring the unknown, the value of field work in science, and the use of the Earth as a natural laboratory before a screening of the original 1959 Journey to the Center of the Earth.

About the film

Based on the 1864 Jules Verne’s novel, James Mason stars as amusingly absent-minded professor Oliver Lindenbrook, whose first step on a fabulous journey is prompted by a lump of lava brought to him by his student Alec McEwen (Pat Boone). Melting down the curiously composed lump, Lindenbrook discovers a hastily scrawled message from long-lost explorer Arne Saknussem, with directions for reaching the earth’s core. Accompanied by Carla (Arlene Dahl), widow of a famed geologist, and Icelandic guide Hans (Peter Ronson), Lindenbrook and Alec head down, down below. They are closely followed by the villainous Count Saknussem (Thayer David), descendant of the lost explorer who wrote the directions; the count hopes to use Lindenbrook’s discoveries for his own personal and political gain. What follows is a festival of superb special effects, fabulous subterranean sets, and gigantized reptiles posing as dinosaurs, all brilliantly accompanied by Bernard Herrmann’s ominous musical score.

About the speakers

Dr. Daniel Hembree is an associate professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at Ohio University, where he teaches courses in general geology, ichnology, and paleopedology. He earned a BS in geology from the University of New Orleans in 1999, and a master’s and PhD in the Department of Geology at the University of Kansas.

Dr. Patrick O’Connor is a paleontologist in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Ohio University. He combines fossil studies in the lab with field research in Madagascar, Tanzania, Egypt, Zimbabwe, and Antarctica. Primarily focused on predatory dinosaurs and birds, his work advanced traditional fossil interpretations by his research examining how different soft-tissue systems influence the size and shape of features preserved on dinosaur skeletons.

Mitigating Oil Pipeline Corrosion and Erosion

Dr. Srdjan Nesic’s talk will focus on his research related to mitigating oil pipeline corrosion and erosion. He will also share the untold story of his involvement with the largest trial in world history, the case surrounding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

About the film

When Daniel Plainview gets a mysterious tip-off that there’s a little town out West where an ocean of oil is oozing out of the ground, he heads there with his son, H.W., to take their chances in dust-worn Little Boston. In this hardscrabble town, where the main excitement centers around the HOLY ROLLER church of charismatic preacher Eli Sunday, Plainview and H.W. make their lucky strike. But even as the well raises all of their fortunes, nothing will remain the same as conflicts escalate and every human value–love, hope, community, belief, ambition, and even the bond between father and son–is imperiled by corruption, deception, and the flow of oil.

About the speaker

Srdjan Nesic, a Russ Professor, has also been director of the Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Flow Technology since 2002. Having taught courses related to thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and corrosion, he also been principal adviser for more than 50 master’s and doctoral students.

Nesic’s research lies at the intersection of transport phenomena and electrochemistry, with applications in corrosion and erosion corrosion. Responsible for more than $30 million in external research funding, almost all from private industry, he is author of more than 10 articles in books including the best known corrosion handbooks such as Uhlig’s Corrosion Handbook and Shriers’s Corrosion, covering acid gas corrosion and erosion corrosion, more than 100 peer-reviewed journal papers, 200 conference papers, and 50 scientific reports in the field of corrosion.

Dr. Nesic also has extensively consulted on corrosion issues for the oil and gas industry, from design to operations to expert witness testimony including the Deepwater Horizon Spill in 2010.

A discussion about the basic science of the “smallest” particles, as well as the scales by which energy and matter are studied at many levels by physicists, led by OU’s Dr. David Ingram.

Particle Fever follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet, pushing the edge of human innovation. As they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe, 10,000 scientists from over 100 countries joined forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreate conditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson, potentially explaining the origin of all matter. But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist? Directed by Mark Levinson, a physicist turned filmmaker, from the inspiration and initiative of producer David Kaplan and masterfully edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, The English Patient), Particle Fever is a celebration of discovery, revealing the very human stories behind this epic machine.

About the speaker

David Ingram has been curious about electronic materials and devices ever since he was 9 years old, when his uncle took him and his family to an open house at the Royal Radar Establishment, Malvern, England, where his uncle had worked since the start of World War II. As an experimentalist, he works on growing new materials and studying their properties. A classic method of making semiconducting devices is to use ion implantation. With this method, one can take any isotope of any element in the periodic table and implant it in a substrate. This led him into the study of the interaction of energetic particles with matter and now into areas of applied nuclear science where low energy nuclear physics and materials science intersect.

A discussion on how far we’ve come and what the next step in evolution will look like with paleo-artist John Gurche.

About the film

Stanley Kubrick’s dazzling, Academy Award-winning achievement is an allegorical puzzle on the evolution of man and a compelling drama of man vs. machine. Kubrick first visits the prehistoric age-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever) into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman into uncharted space, perhaps even into immortality.

About the speaker

John Gurche’s award winning work has appeared on the covers of National Geographic, Discover and Natural History Magazines and his work can be seen at the Smithsonian, the Field Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History, among others. Of prime importance in this work are scientific accuracy and a high degree of realism that will transport the viewer in time. His work focuses especially on human origins and on dinosaurs, but includes other ancient life as well.

The Regulation of Population Growth

Dr. Willem M. Roosenburg leads a discussion on whether we can effectively regulate human population growth and simultaneously accommodate the sociological, political, and religious freedoms to which we have become accustomed. He also explores the question: If we don’t regulate population growth, where will it take us at the current rate and how might it be controlled naturally?

About the film

The year is 2027, and women can no longer give birth. The youngest inhabitant of the planet has just died at the age of 18, and all hope for humanity has been lost. As civilization descends into chaos, a dying world finds one last chance for survival in the form of a woman who has become inexplicably pregnant. Now, as warring nationalistic sects clash and British leaders try to maintain their totalitarian stronghold on the country, a disillusioned bureaucrat (Clive Owen) is brought back into the fold of activism by his guerrilla ex-wife (Julianne Moore). Reluctantly, he takes on the daunting task of escorting Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey), the refugee who represents humankind’s last hope for survival, out of harm’s way and into the care of a mysterious organization known as The Human Project. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Charlie Hunnam, and Michael Caine co-star in this adaptation of author P.D. James’s gripping 1992 novel.

From Dr. Willem M. Roosenburg’s Ohio University bio:

“In my research, I investigate the evolution of life history traits (e.g. survivorship, reproductive rates, age of first reproduction etc.) and the conservation biology (extinction and loss of biodiversity due to anthropomorphic causes) of long-lived organisms. My research philosophy is to develop a species of interest as a model system and to gain a mechanistic understanding of how environmental variation affects population dynamics of that species, using a variety of tools. I combine demographic and experimental techniques to observe variation within populations and to predict the outcome of environmental perturbations on survivorship and reproductive rates. The utility of my approach is that it allows me to simultaneously address basic ecological and evolutionary questions as well as conservation and management issues. My research focuses on how population structure, behavior, and offspring phenotype are influenced by the interaction between the incubation environment and environmental sex determination (ESD), a peculiar sex determining system in which the sex of the developing embryos is determined by the incubation temperature after the eggs are laid.”
