Spring Sustainability Series: HELENA SARAYAKU MANTA

Watch Trailer

About the film

Traveling between her life in Finland and her mother’s homeland deep in the rainforests of Ecuador, 17-year-old Helena Gualinga yearns to protect her indigenous community from extractive development and the repercussions of climate change. Her story highlights the efforts of the Kichwa people of Sarayaku to recognize the Amazon rainforest as a “Kawsak Sacha – Living Jungle”. The “Living Jungle” is both a cultural philosophy and a proposal to governments that states the rainforest is not a resource to be used, rather it is a living and conscious entity in need of legal protection. With the help of her Sarayaku elders’ wisdom, Helena sets out on a journey to educate the world about the importance of conserving the Amazon Rainforest, traveling to New York City to participate in climate marches and giving speeches about indigenous sovereignty. A story of perseverance and resilience, Helena Sarayaku Manta, is an ode to indigenous communities striving to preserve their culture as they face consequences of a globalized world and the hastening effects of climate change.

Watch Trailer Director: Emile Ardolino
Writer(s): Eleanor Bergstein
Cast: Jennifer Grey, Patrick Swayze, Cynthia Rhodes

Join us Thursday, September 22nd at 7pm for a screening of DIRTY DANCING. This year marks the 35th anniversary of this timeless film, and the storyline started a dialogue about women’s reproductive rights. Admission is $10 and will be donated to Abortion Fund of Ohio.

About the Film

Baby (Jennifer Grey) is one listless summer away from the Peace Corps. Hoping to enjoy her youth while it lasts, she’s disappointed when her summer plans deposit her at a sleepy resort in the Catskills with her parents. Her luck turns around, however, when the resort’s dance instructor, Johnny (Patrick Swayze), enlists Baby as his new partner, and the two fall in love. Baby’s father forbids her from seeing Johnny, but she’s determined to help him perform the last big dance of the summer.

About Abortion Fund of Ohio

Abortion Fund of Ohio (formerly Women Have Options (WHO/O)) is Ohio’s statewide abortion fund. Founded in 1992, we are an organization dedicated to helping Ohioans afford their reproductive choices. We believe that everyone should be able to make their own reproductive decisions—and we work to make that a reality in Ohio. We are a founding member of the National Network of Abortion Funds, which includes more than 100 abortion funds around the United States and overseas.

We provide financial assistance and practical support (transportation, housing, and more) to help patients afford contraception, emergency contraception, and abortion services. We distribute funds to clinics throughout Ohio. These clinics, in turn, use the funds to provide financial assistance to those in need. Since 1992, Abortion Fund of Ohio has helped thousands pay for their reproductive choices.

OU PARENTS WEEKEND: Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Sing Along!

Watch Trailer Director: Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones
Writer(s): Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael Palin
Cast: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael Palin

We’re celebrating OU Parents weekend with a showing of MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, a classic comedy sure to have your parents in stitches.

From its opening multi-language titles (that sure looks like Swedish) to the closing arrest of the entire Dark Ages cast by modern-day bobbies, Monty Python and the Holy Grail helped to define “irreverence” and became an instant cult classic. This time the Pythonites savage the legend of King Arthur, juxtaposing some excellently selected exterior locations with an unending stream of anachronistic one-liners, non sequiturs, and slapstick set pieces. The Knights of the Round Table set off in search of the Holy Grail on foot, as their lackeys make clippety-clop sounds with coconut shells.

FIRST YEAR MFA SCREENING

First year students in the School of Film go through “boot camp.” They all take a prescribed series of classes in production, sound, editing, acting, directing, screenwriting, producing, and film studies. During this intensive foundation-building year, they are also compiling a creative portfolio under fairly strict guidelines that includes two 16mm narrative films and a high-def observational documentary.

The Ohio University School of Film fosters an educational environment of creativity, diversity, and excellence. Our students are passionate and disciplined; their styles are eclectic. The only Ohio filmmaking formula is the convergence of technical expertise and skilled visual storytelling. Within this rigorous setting, our students examine and develop motion pictures as an art form, educational tool, and vehicle for social change.

Free Admission sponsored by Arts for Ohio.

About the film

When John Klein, a respected Washington Post journalist, and his wife Mary find the dream house they have been hunting for, life could hardly get better. Then on their joyful ride home the dream is shattered when Mary crashes the car and is killed. While removing Mary’s possessions from the hospital, John discovers a sketchpad covered with odd drawings, variations of the same eerie apparition. John is haunted by the unsettling images.

One night, while driving from Washington, John loses his way and ends up on a deserted country highway in Point Pleasant, West Virginia — four hundred miles from where he thought he was. When John decides to stay in Point Pleasant to explore the reports of unexplained phenomena in the town, he soon realizes that they may all be related – not just to each other, but also to the strange sketches Mary had been obsessively drawing just hours before her death.
