HERETIC

Watch Trailer Director: Scott Beck, Bryan Woods
Cast: Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East, Topher Grace

We’re excited to show this movie…so excited we created a special cocktail called

“The Blueberry Pie”

Only at the Athena!

Hugh Grant gets dark in a new thriller from A24 Studios!

We’ve all been visited by Mormons going door-to-door, trying to spread the word about their religion. However, when two young female missionaries are greeted at the door by a plain-looking, bespectacled man and invited inside under the (false) pretense of some delicious blueberry pie, they soon discover that he’s actually a scholar dangerously well-versed in the doctrines of faith who has laid a devilish trap for them.

Written and directed by filmmaking duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, Haunt, 65), Heretic will have you squirming in your seat as the story compels you to acknowledge that fear might be the undeniable truth at the heart of religious faith.

CONCLAVE

Watch Trailer Director: Edward Berger
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Isabella Rossellini

The death of a pope is a world-changing event, especially if you are one of the select few who is tasked with selecting a successor. Two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes stars as “Cardinal Lawrence”, a senior member of the Catholic clergy in Rome who, in the wake of the current pope’s demise, is given the responsibility of convening the College of Cardinals and holding an election to decide who will lead the largest Christian organization on the globe – an election that takes place in a secret, sequestered ceremony known as a “conclave”. Complicating matters further is the fact that the former pope had secrets that begin coming to light as the group members make their cases for who the new pope should be. Moreover, Lawrence himself is a strong candidate who may have to face-off with a challenger while the fate and future direction of The Church hangs in the balance.

Based on the novel by Robert Harris and featuring an acclaimed cast, Conclave is sure to appeal to fans of films like 12 Angry Men – a film that takes viewers to an inner sanctum where intense discussions are had, disparate opinions and ambitions clash, and the final outcome is uncertain until the very end.

THE APPRENTICE

Watch Trailer Director: Ali Abassi
Cast: Sebastian Sta, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova, Martin Donovan
Awards: Palm d'Or (nom) - Cannes Film Festival

Never admit defeat – This is just one bit of advice imparted to the young Donald Trump by his mentor Roy Cohn during Trump’s meteoric rise to the top of not just a New York skyscraper but of American pop culture itself. In The Apprentice, Sebastian Stan (A Different Man, Pam & Tommy, Captain America: The First Avenger) and Jeremy Strong (Succession) star in this controversial bio-pic — an origin story, of sorts — that details Trump’s career as a Manhattan real estate developer during the 70s and 80s, and his reliance on the tutelage of lawyer Cohn whose moral compass points only at winning.

Directed by Ali Abassi (Shelley, The Last of Us) and scripted by journalist/author Gabriel Sherman, The Apprentice is mostly based on known facts about Trump’s life and his relationship to Cohn – all culled from court transcripts, interviews, biographies, and other reputable sources. Featuring stellar performances, the film has stirred a storm of publicity due to its unflattering (though likely accurate) portrayal of a man who openly invites controversy and who has striven to leave an indelible mark on American society.

The two young ladies meet and strike up a friendship which proves to be a monumental event in each of their lives — neither realizes what the future will ultimately entail. After an encounter with the wonderful Wizard of Oz (played by Jeff Goldblum), the pair soon sees their solid friendship start to diverge as each begins to pursue their own path through life — Glinda’s ambitions are for renown and power, Elphaba seeks a more heart-centric path. FLOW

Watch Trailer Director: Gints Zilbalodis

About the film

After its home is destroyed by a cataclysmic flood, a solitary black cat sets off on a journey to find dry land. Along the way, Cat meets several other animals in the same predicament – a capybara, a lemur, a bird, and a dog – and the little group bands together to continue the quest. They find a small boat, and, by learning the importance of courage, trust, and reliance on one another, they attempt to navigate the uncharted waters of an inundated world and, if lucky, find a new place to call home.

Already selected to compete for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Latvian director Gint Zilbalodis’s Flow is being called one of the best (non-Disney) animated films of recent memory.

THE RETURN

Watch Trailer Director: Uberto Pasolini
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Charlie Plummer,

From award-winning Italian director Uberto Pasolini comes a fresh re-telling of Homer’s classic epic poem The Odyssey starring Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, and Charlie Plummer.

Bruised and battle-scarred from a 20-year absence wherein he fought in The Trojan War and spent years at sea trying to get home, Greek hero Odysseus (Fiennes) washes up on the shores of his native Ithaca, a shadow of his former, mighty self. While it is satisfying to feel the ground of his homeland beneath his feet once again, all is not well in his kingdom: His wife, Penelope (Binoche), is beset by suitors who have been trying for years to undermine her resolve to wait for her husband’s return and who threaten the life of her son, Telemachus, lest he vie for his right to sit on the throne of his father. So that he may win back control of his realm, the wily Odysseus must use his skills as a fearless warrior and his indomitable cunning to rid Ithaca of all who fail to herald the return of its long lost king.

Filmed on location in Greece, The Return is a much-needed modern update to one of the greatest stories from ancient times!

Burroughs.
