Classics & Cocktails: STRANGERS ON A TRAIN

Watch Trailer Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Have you ever driven a car blindfolded at 150 miles an hour? Neither have we.

Join us on Friday, February 16th at 7pm for the classic Alfred Hitchcock film STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. We’ll be pairing this legendary psychological thriller with the H&H 50’s Party Punch cocktail, a nod to the two minds that mingled to create this classic, Patricia Highsmith and Alfred Hitchcock were both preoccupied by the dark side of the human psyche. Many directors have attempted film adaptations of her novels, but few have succeeded as Hitchcock did when he brought the story of the STRANGERS ON A TRAIN to the big screen. This specialty cocktail is made with Appleton Rum, Old Forester Bourbon, pear liqueur, pineapple, lemon, sugar, vanilla and seltzer.

Admission is $8. Drink prices vary.

About the Film

A psychopathic man tries to forcibly persuade a tennis star to agree to his theory that two strangers can get away with murder by submitting to his plan to kill the other’s most-hated person.

What could be better than a team-up between the Master of Suspense Alfred Hitchcock and masterful writer of crime fiction Raymond Chandler..? It’s a surprise that, upon its release in 1951, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN failed to make much of an impact with critics; however, the film has since come to be regarded as on of Hitchcock’s many masterpieces and has been selected to for preservation in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry.

Along with the specialty cocktail, we will have a full menu of wine, local beer and local ciders.

Classics & Cocktails: JACKIE BROWN

Watch Trailer Director: Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert DeNiro, Robert Forster

Our Classics & Cocktails series wraps up with the 1997 Quentin Tarantino classic JACKIE BROWN on February 23rd at 7pm. We’ll be pairing the film with a fun specialty cocktail called the Jackie’s Rum Punch in honor of Elmore Leonard’s novel Rum Punch. Made with Pineapple Rum, orange, lime, ginger, sugar, tiki bitters, allspice dram, Skadi’s Cup Cyser, seltzer.

Admission is $8. Drink prices vary.

About the Film

A flight attendant with a criminal past gets nabbed by the ATF for smuggling. Under pressure to become an informant against the drug dealer she works for, she must find a way to secure her future without getting killed.

JACKIE BROWN is Quentin Tarantino’s third cinematic dose of retro Hollywood flair. His choice to cast 1970s blaxploitation icon Pam Grier in the lead role was a stroke of genius and continues to connect the film to the soulful charm of its predecessors. Add to that an ensemble cast including Robert DeNiro, Samuel L. Jackson, Bridgette Fonda, and even Tony Curtis, this film, while more understated than most of his others, is one of Tarantino’s best!

Along with the specialty cocktail, we will have a full menu of wine, local beer and local ciders.

Classics & Cocktails: REPO MAN

Watch Trailer Director: Alex Cox
Cast: Emilio Estevez, Harry Dean Stanton

Widely considered one of the best films of 1984 – a year which also saw the release of huge films like Revenge of the Nerds, the original Dune, and The Never Ending Story – REPO MAN is the evergreen, cult classic satire of America’s Reagan Era.

The featured cocktail is the Berry Kamikaze, made with fresh strawberry infused Eleven Square vodka, Naranja Orange liqueur, lime cordial and raspberry liqueur.

The Berry KamikazeOtto Maddox (Emilio Estevez) is a young punk in L.A. who loses his job, his girl, and his desire to put up with his hippie-ish parents. Wandering the streets one night, Otto is approached by Bud (Harry Dean Stanton) and offered a small sum of money to drive a car out of the neighborhood. This leads to Otto getting swept up in a chain of events that involves him begrudgingly becoming a “repo man” and chasing after the $20K bounty on a Chevy Malibu whose trunk may contain something more otherworldly than a spare tire.

With its weird special effects, its cinematic snapshots of the Mojave Desert and mid-1980’s Los Angeles, and a punked-up soundtrack by Iggy Pop (not to mention a cameo appearance from punk legends The Circle Jerks), REPO MAN is a love letter to its era and unlike any other film you’ve seen.

Classics & Cocktails: SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER

Watch Trailer Director: John Badham
Cast: John Travolta, Karen Lynn Gorney

How deep is your love…for this classic movie?! This is the film that made John Travolta and The Bee Gees household names. This is the film that cinema critic Gene Siskel put at the top of his list of all-time favorites. This is the film that will make you want to boogie!

The featured cocktail is the Midori Sour, made with Midori melon liqueur, Eleven Square vodka, fresh lemon and lime juice and soda water.

Travolta is “Tony Manero”, a Brooklyn teen on the verge of manhood, who works a dead-end job in a paint store by day but becomes king of the dancefloor among the nightlife of his favorite discotheque. The gritty streets of New York are a tough place for a young man, however, and Tony finds himself embroiled in several situations that threaten to break him down and undermine his faith in the power of dance to set him free.

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER is, possibly, the quintessential late-70’s film, featuring a hip-shaking, Grammy-winning soundtrack that almost-singlehandedly launched the American Disco craze. It also garnered Travolta an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. It continues to resonate with audiences and influence popular culture nearly half-a-century later.

Classics & Cocktails: O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?

Watch Trailer Director: The Coen Brothers
Cast: George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, John Goodman, Holly Hunter

When three convicts escape from a Mississippi chain-gang, they go on the hunt for buried treasure and wind up on a harrowing and hilarious adventure that Homer himself could scarcely come up with!

The featured cocktail is the Dapper Pie Spritz, made with Appleton rum, fresh lemon and apple juice, turbinado sugar, Tiki bitters, seltzer and cinnamon garnish.

The Coen Brothers expertly blend together the Depression-era South, Homeric epic poetry, and delta folk/blues in their sepia-tinted satire O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? Inspired as much by The Odyssey as by the 1941 Peter Sturgis film Sullivan’s Travels, this follow-up to Fargo and The Big Lebowski represents The Coens at the height of their powers.

Featuring unforgettable performances by George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson, the cast also includes Chris Thomas King, John Goodman, Holly Hunter, and cameos from a host of luminaries from the folk music scene of the time. The Grammy-winning soundtrack, produced by music legend T Bone Burnett, is a who’s-who of American folk, bluegrass, and country music performers; and, the film was nominated for both the Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars at the 2001 Academy Awards ceremony.
