About the film

This 1993 sequel film sees the return to the big screen of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley, and Lurch – the one-and-only Addams Family! As they welcome baby Pubert, a new addition addition to the family circus, the Addams’s find themselves in need of a nanny. They hire outwardly-kind Debbie, who turns out to actually be a serial killer who preys on rich bachelors. Debbie seduces Fester, secretly planning to make him one of her victims and inherit his wealth. As the plot thickens, Debbie’s efforts to eliminate her new beau keep falling short. And, she ends up getting a taste of her own medicine as Baby Pubert saves the day and proves he’s got what it takes to continue the Addams Family name.

Did you know there’s an independent movie theater right in the heart of Uptown Athens? We’re the Athena Cinema, and we’re kicking off Welcome Week with one of our favorite events of the year: a movie under the stars on top of the Athens City Parking Garage.

Come early, grab some popcorn and a drink, settle in with your friends, and enjoy an evening of cinema with a beautiful view of Athens.

This event reaches capacity quickly, so we strongly recommend claiming your tickets in advance!

WHAT TO BRING

We have a limited number of chairs available, so bring your own chair, blanket, pillow, or anything else that will make you comfortable.

We’ll have popcorn, candy, canned soda, bottled water, and Athena merchandise available for purchase on the rooftop.

RAIN PLAN

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the screening will move indoors to the Athena Cinema.

ABOUT THE FILM

Amélie (2001) is a whimsical French romantic comedy from acclaimed director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, starring Audrey Tautou as Amélie, a shy young waitress living in Paris’s Montmartre neighborhood.

With a vivid imagination and a love of helping others, Amélie quietly sets out to improve the lives of the people around her. Along the way, she discovers that creating a little happiness for others might help her find some of her own.

Sustainability Series: DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE with Jodie Childers and Dan Messina

Join us Wednesday, September 9th at 7:00 p.m. as we begin our 14th annual Sustainability Film Series with a fantastic documentary featuring the environmental activism efforts of legendary folk musician Pete Seeger!

Local musician Steve Zarate will be performing songs by Pete Seeger in The Athena lobby from 6:20 p.m. until the 7:00 p.m. showtime

About the film

In the 1960s, the iconic American folk singer Pete Seeger devised an audacious plan—to build a sailboat to save the polluted Hudson River. But the Clearwater was not just a beautiful wooden vessel; it was also a movement, intersecting environmentalism, civil rights, and antiwar activism.

An intimate portrait of Pete and the grassroots community he anchored in the Hudson Valley for over forty years with his wife Toshi, Down by the Riverside shows how an unconventional campaign to save a beloved American waterway prompted a green revolution.

As the globe confronts a seemingly insurmountable climate crisis, this film is a parable for our time that offers hope for the next generation, revealing the potential of imagination, music, and participation to transform the planet.

About the filmmakers

Jodie Childers is a documentary filmmaker and writer based in NYC and Charlottesville, VA, where she is an assistant professor at the University of Virginia. She produced The Other Parade, and she directed and shot Down by the Riverside, which premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival. Her writing has been featured in American Quarterly, the Journal of Transnational American Studies, Comparative American Studies, The Conversation, Jacobin, Transatlantica, The Pittsburgh Review of Books, Boulevard, and The Hopkins Review, among others. She holds a Ph.D. in American studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an M.F.A. in creative writing from Brooklyn College.

Dan Messina is a showrunner, director, and editor with twenty years of experience in nonfiction film and television. He directed the documentary feature Down by the Riverside, which premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival, and The Other Parade, which screened at Frameline and was broadcast on RTE. Dan is currently the showrunner for the hit series The Real Murders of Atlanta on Oxygen. He also executive-produced Women on Death Row for A&E, and he has served as showrunner, producer, and editor for shows on Discovery+, National Geographic, Investigation Discovery, and OWN, among others.

About the film

Samantha Smart (who also wrote the screenplay) stars as “Al”, a young music therapist who plies her trade by healing troubled adolescent clients with song. When Al encounters Charlie, a traumatized and hard-hearted teenage girl, she finds it hard to make breakthrough and help Charlie have a more positive outlook on life. However, Al slowly-but-surely begins to penetrate Charlie’s tough exterior, and the two find camaraderie when a project comes along that helps the two form a solid bond of friendship. As it turns out, Al has her own trauma-filled past and, as she helps her new client, she is forced to confront her own existential struggles.

About the filmmaker

Libby Ewing is an award-winning director, writer, and actor who grew up in the foothills of Appalachia.  Ewing’s feature directorial debut CHARLIEBIRD received top prize of the Founders Award for “Best Picture” at Tribeca Festival 2025 as well as “Best Performance,”, SCAD Savannah Film Festival Best Narrative Feature 2025, Lucca Film Festival Critics Marcello Petrozziello Award, and Sarasota Film Festival Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature, among others. Her work focuses on female driven stories that explore themes of class, spirituality, and grief. She splits time between Ohio and NYC.

OHIO Scripps School of Journalism Presents: THE CORRESPONDENT with Peter Greste

About the film

The Correspondent is based on the true story of award-winning Australian foreign correspondent and journalist Peter Greste. The film details Greste’s two-year arrest and imprisonment in Cairo at the hands of the Egyptian Government after he was charged and convicted of spreading false news and aiding the Muslim Brotherhood while serving as an Al Jazeera English journalist reporting on the unrest in the streets during the Arab Spring uprising. Incorporating flashbacks of Greste’s past reporting assignments — including a fateful BBC assignment in Somalia wherein his friend and colleague Kate Peyton was shot and killed — this poignant film from Australian director Kriv Stenders, and based on Greste’s own memoir, deftly examines the real-world consequences faced by professional journalists who attempt to speak truth to power.

About Peter Greste

Professor Peter Greste is an award-winning foreign correspondent who spent 25 years working for the BBC, Reuters and Al Jazeera in some of the world’s most volatile places. From Afghanistan, to Latin American, Africa and the Middle East, he reported from the frontlines and beyond, although he is best known for becoming a headline himself, when he and two of his colleagues were arrested in Cairo while working for Al Jazeera, and charged with terrorism offences. In letters smuggled from prison, he described the arrests as an attack on media freedom. The letters helped launch a global campaign that eventually got them released after more than 400 days in prison. He has since become a vocal campaigner and advocate for media freedom – a stance that has earned him awards from Britain’s Royal Television Society, the Walkley Foundation, the RSL’s ANZAC Peace Prize, the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Human Rights Medal, and the International Association of Press Clubs’ Freedom of Speech Award. He has written about his experiences in Egypt and what he regards as the global war on journalism in a book, The First Casualty.

About the film

When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, she embarks on a journey to push for the first-ever U.S. legislation against bias in algorithms that impact us all.

About the speaker

Uzoma Miller is a music educator, who focuses on the interconnectedness of diasporic African musical forms and the cultural dynamics intricately embedded therein. In addition to studying place-based HBCU public history through an asset-based lens, he teaches such courses as Blacks in Contemporary American Cinema and Introduction to Africana Media Studies. His scholarly and creative out put includes co-editing A Call to Reason: Building Inclusive Pedagogy & Wellness Rhetoric into Classrooms (Cognella, 2027), authoring a book review for Terence Bailey’s Do You Remember? Celebrating 50 Years of Earth, Wind, and Fire (Journal of Black Studies, 2025), and curating an annual student-led and music-focused Africana Arts & Artists Symposium (2022-2025) at OHIO.
Miller secured his PhD in Transformative Studies from The California Institute of Intergral Studies, a Master’s in Political Science from Jackson State University, and his Bachelor’s in History from Morehouse College. At OHIO, he currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Instruction, and the Undergraduate Advising Coordinator, Department of African American Studies; Affiliate Faculty, School of International Studies & Languages; and Affiliate Faculty, Department of History. Dr. Miller is the Co-Director of the Faculty Mentoring Program and is the 2025-2026 Institutional Winner of the Mis-American Conference (MAC) Award for Student Success.

Infamous drag queen Divine stars in this quintessential 1972 classic from writer-director John Waters that tells the story of Babs Johnson, an illustrious criminal known as “the filthiest person alive!” When two lesser hoodlums take it upon themselves to try and outdo Babs, the grotesquerie, bizarre-ness, crudity, and sadistic sensationalism rise to levels that only Waters could have the guts to put on film!

This self-proclaimed “exercise in poor taste” may not be for the squeamish, but this film put John Waters on the map in terms of a filmmaker willing to push the boundaries of the artform, and it became a cornerstone of the “abject art” movement. If you’re brave enough to make it to the end, you’ll definitely leave with the knowledge that you just witnessed something unique in all of cinematic history!
