About the film

Donna (Meryl Streep), an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter’s wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. Earth Day Event: THE SHEPHERD AND THE BEAR with Brooks Kohli

Join us Wednesday, April 22nd at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate Earth Day with a beautiful documentary that tells the story of two species whose lives are under threat of extinction in the French Pyrenees — the brown bear and the shepherd.

About the film

In this immersive film by British filmmaker Max Keegan, we are transported to the mountains of southern France and the rugged environment where brown bears were hunted to extinction a quarter of a century ago, largely because of the perception that the large, predominantly vegetarian predators are lethal to the herds of sheep who graze the mountainsides. Through the efforts of conservationists, however, the bears have been slowly re-introduced to the area — against the wishes of the few shepherds who still ply their trade in the region. And so, we meet Yves, an aging sheep-herder who is struggling to train a young woman about his traditional way of life before he becomes too elderly to maintain his flock. Yves is staunchly against the return of the bears because he sees them as an primary threat to his livelihood.

Gorgeously-shot and insightful, The Shepherd and The Bear is an unforgettable film that reveals how the conflicting needs of Nature and Humankind can shape the past, present, and future of a land and its people.

About the Speaker

Brooks grew up in Circleville, Ohio, the home of the Pumpkin Show, and earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences from the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University. After graduating, he moved to various corners of the country for graduate school, work as a wildlife, fisheries, and conservation technician, and academic positions before ending up back in Athens in 2022 as a faculty member in the Honors Tutorial College. He joined the Biological Sciences Department in January 2024. His favorite place in the world is Great Basin National Park, Nevada, where he did much of the field work for his dissertation on small mammal ecology, biogeography, and conservation. His research interests are centered on the diversity, distribution, monitoring, and conservation of mammals, especially small mammals like rodents and shrews.

About the film

Written and directed by and starring Steven Grayhm, Sheepdog relates the story of Calvin Cole, a medal-winning US Army combat veteran who’s traumatic wartime experiences prove tough to overcome in his struggle to return to a normal civilian life. A judge orders Cole to enroll in a course of therapy through the Veterans Administration to help him deal with his problems, but Cole’s path to recovery is challenged when his father-in-law, an ex-convict and veteran of the previous generation’s Vietnam War (played by Vondi Curtis-Hall), re-enters his life and forces him to confront his past and find a way to chart a course into the future.

The Met: Live in HD: Tchaikovsky’s EUGENE ONEGIN

Following her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met as Tatiana, the lovestruck young heroine in this ardent operatic adaptation of Pushkin. Baritone Igor Golovatenko reprises his portrayal of the urbane Onegin, who realizes his affection for her all too late. The Met’s evocative production, directed by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner, “offers a beautifully detailed reading of … Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance” (The Telegraph).

The screening will begin at 12:55 p.m. and will conclude at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Kristen Stewart stars as “Lou”, a small town gym owner who’s trying to toe the straight-and-narrow and get out from under the shadow of her family’s criminal tendencies. When up-and-coming bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brian) passes through on her way to a big competition in Las Vegas, Lou falls hard for her and the two begin a passionate love affair. The flames of passion, however, end up kindling a bigger inferno that ultimately engulfs them in a wildfire of revenge.

From A24 Studios, Love Lies Bleeding is a steamy, edgy romantic thriller that could have been pulled from the pages of an old pulp novel. This sophomore effort from British filmmaker Rose Glass (Saint Maud) also features a tour-de-force performance from Ed Harris as Lou’s father/nemesis “Lou Sr.”

About the film

The emotions are back!

Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust all return in the follow-up to the hit 2015 animated film from Pixar. Young Riley is now a teen who’s reached some big new emotional milestones – she’s now a high school freshman, treading the road of adolescence, and heading to a three-day hockey camp where she’ll be thrust into competition with other young ladies – all of which undoubtedly pose challenges to her emotional well-being. As a result, Joy and her cohorts have created a new section in Riley’s adolescent mind, the “Sense of Self”, as well as a mechanism meant to relay negative thoughts and memories to the back recesses of Riley’s subconscious. However, along with physical maturity comes a higher level of emotional complexity. Joining Joy and the others are 4 new emotions that will complicate Riley’s stability – Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Anxiety – and raise the stakes of Joy’s efforts to keep Riley on an even (and positive) keel as Riley tries to cope with all the new emotionally-charged experiences of young-adulthood.
