Beat The Heat: WONKA

Ever wonder how everyone’s favorite candy man came to be so..? Timothée Chalamet stars in Wonka the film that tells the backstory of Roald Dahl’s classic character – Willy Wonka!

Before he was the head honcho of the famed Chocolate Factory, the young Wonka was part-inventor-part-magician, with a sweet tooth for cocoa-flavored confections that offer a bit more magic than the standard sugar buzz. Willy invents “hoverchocs”, a chocolatey treat that makes people levitate, and signs a contract with an agent who promises to help him achieve his dream of starting his own chocolate shop. But, rival Arthur Slugworth (Paterson Joseph) and his other nefarious partners undermine Willy’s good fortune. Thankfully, help comes to Willy from an unlikely source – an Oompa Loompa named Lofty (Hugh Grant) – and things are set in motion that will result in the whimsical Chocolate Factory finally becoming a reality.

Nominated for numerous awards – including a Golden Globe and several People’s Choice honors for Chalamet – director Paul King’s Wonka features excellent special effects, an energetic cast, and a batch of new songs that all combine to revitalize one of the all-time greatest characters in the history of fantasy films.

When famine and cataclysm beset the world of the dinosaurs, four young saurians – Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky, and Petrie – go in search of relief in a mythical place known as the Great Valley. Their journey presents the group with trials and tribulations that will test their commitment to each other and lead them to discover what is truly important in life. If they can overcome the difficulties they face, they may end up finding more than just salvation.

Executive produced by such Hollywood luminaries as Stephen Spielberg, George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, and Frank Marshall, and directed by Don Bluth (The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail), The Land Before Time exists because some of the best minds in movies came together to create this beautiful and endearing 1988 film. Even though the story is set in a prehistoric age, the message it conveys still rings true in these modern times…and always will!

This year marks the 40th anniversary of one of Hollywood’s most magnificent fantasy films – The NeverEnding Story!

After his recently-widowed father confronts him about daydreaming too much, bookish 10-year old Bastian Bux heads to school with many deep thoughts to consider. On the way, he encounters a group of bullies who give chase and cause Bastian to take refuge in an odd little bookstore. He takes interest in the unusual book that the proprietor is reading, but is cautioned against opening its cover. When the proprietor becomes distracted, Bastian seizes the opportunity to borrow the book and retreats to the attic of the school to begin reading it. He soon discovers that not only does a world beyond his imagination lie within the pages of the book, but also that he is somehow connected to the events that unfold as the story progresses.

Director Wolfgang Petersen’s film is a triumph of movie magic, with an awe-inspiring plot, unforgettable characters, and it’s message of never losing sight of the fact that a strong imagination can keep the world from forever slipping away.

While working at a bubblegum factory, the two wacky ‘toons inadvertently stumble upon a devious plot wherein an alien civilization plans to invade and conquer the Earth using mind control. Enlisting the help of Petunia Pig, Porky and Daffy take it upon themselves to thwart this nefarious scheme – as long as they can keep from driving one another crazy in the meantime.

Never before has there been a feature film starring the classic Looney Tunes characters, so this lovingly-crafted, hilarious film by director Peter Browngardt is not just a historical first, but is also full of first-class laughs!

Beat the Heat: FLOW

After its home is destroyed by a cataclysmic flood, a solitary black cat sets off on a journey to find dry land. Along the way, Cat meets several other animals in the same predicament – a capybara, a lemur, a bird, and a dog – and the little group bands together to continue the quest. They find a small boat, and, by learning the importance of courage, trust, and reliance on one another, they attempt to navigate the uncharted waters of an inundated world and, if lucky, find a new place to call home.

Already selected to compete for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Latvian director Gint Zilbalodis’s Flow is being called one of the best (non-Disney) animated films of recent memory.

About the film

After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.

Partnering with Ohio Children’s Alliance, The Athena Cinema is proud to present a screening of INSIDE OUT on Saturday, June 17th at 3pm. Seating begins at 2:30pm at the Baker University Theatre. Admission is a monetary donation to the IFCR to raise funds for CDKL5 research. The event will feature raffles, a bake sale and a special reading of a children’s book, ahead of the movie!

Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) is a happy, hockey-loving 11-year-old Midwestern girl, but her world turns upside-down when she and her parents move to San Francisco. Riley’s emotions — led by Joy (Amy Poehler) — try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the stress of the move brings Sadness (Phyllis Smith) to the forefront. About the film

In this animated adaptation of Ted Hughes’ Cold War fable, a giant alien robot (Vin Diesel) crash-lands near the small town of Rockwell, Maine, in 1957. Exploring the area, a local 9-year-old boy, Hogarth, discovers the robot, and soon forms an unlikely friendship with him. About the film

The tiny Kirikou is born into an African village upon which a sorceress called Karaba has cast a terrible spell: the spring has dried up, the villagers are being blackmailed, the men of the village have either been kidnapped or have mysteriously disappeared. He wants to rid the village of the curse so he goes on a voyage to the Forbidden Mountain, where the Wise Man of the Mountain, who knows of Karaba and her secrets, awaits him. The film contains many instances of nudity that reflect the non-sexualized view of the human body in the West African culture depicted.
