MAESTRO

Watch Trailer Director: Bradley Cooper
Writer(s): Bradley Cooper, Josh Singer
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan
Awards: Golden Lion (nom) - Venice Int'l Film Festival

Bradley Cooper returns to being on both sides of the camera with Maestro, a film that explores the complex relationship between the celebrated conductor-and-composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia. Bernstein, who never publicly acknowledged his homosexuality, was known to have had several affairs throughout his life with both men and women. Nevertheless, the couple stayed mostly committed to one another until Felicia’s untimely death in the late-1970s from lung cancer.

Cooper writes, directs, and stars as Bernstein, opposite Carey Mulligan who plays the role of his wife. Since its premiere in September of 2023, the film, shot in exquisite black-and-white, has been nominated for a Golden Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival.

ALL DIRT ROADS TASTE OF SALT

Watch Trailer Director: Raven Jackson
Writer(s): Raven Jackson
Cast: Charlene McClure, Moses Ingram, Chris Chalk

The debut film from writer/director Raven Jackson, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt is a poetic journey through the life of Mack, a black woman living in modern-day rural Mississippi. The sparsely-dialogued plot follows Mack throughout several portions of her life, from childhood to old age, as she experiences love, loss, fear, joy…all the myriad sentiments that make a life a Life.

Jackson’s choice to utilize multiple actors for several characters as they age in the film really helps to elevate the sense of time passing as the story moves through the decades. Also, the movie was filmed on location in rural southern towns that have changed very little over the course of the last half-a-century, and this gives the film a very strong “sense of place”.

All Dirt Roads is a masterful debut and masterpiece of lyricality:  not only a moving portrayal of a life, but also a moving portrait of life in the Deep South.

From the Hills & Hollers: Appalachian Stories Film Series

We’re thrilled to present the 3rd annual From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Stories Film Series for 2024-2025! Launched in 2022, this series has so far been a resounding success with the local community, so we’re extremely pleased to continue our presentation of this very special line of programming!

The Hills & Hollers series seeks to foster a deeper connection between the residents of Athens city and the Ohio University community to the cultural legacy of the surrounding region through films that examine the many facets, both positive and negative, of life in Appalachia. Each year’s batch of films is, in large part, the product of filmmakers who have intimate knowledge of living in this environment and, as a result, are well-suited for representing the realities of Appalachia on the big screen.

Short introductions/lectures will provide context for the film and identify the underlying issues related to the film’s portrayal of Appalachian culture. After each screening, a special guest speaker will engage with the audience in a Q&A session to further discuss important topics related to the film.

All events in the series are presented with free admission.

This series is sponsored by the Ohio Honors Program, University Libraries, College of Health Sciences and Professions, The Department of Social and Public Health, GO Local, University College, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, The Multicultural Center and The Black Student Cultural Programming Board, Center for Campus and Community Engagement, and The Women’s Center.

Sustainability Film Series

Athena Cinema, Office of Sustainability and the Environmental Studies Program present the 12th annual Sustainability Film Series. This year’s series has the added honor of coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of OHIO’s Environmental Studies Program!

At the heart of this series are films that present the challenges facing our world – topics as wide-ranging as climate change, economic hardship, natural resource management, and much more. We strive to present films that attempt to provide practical solutions to these imminent problems and embody an inspiring message to motivate audiences to action. In other words, viewers should walk away from each screening with a deeper understanding of the film’s topic, while also feeling compelled to get out into the world and make some positive change.

This year, each of our film screenings will feature guest speakers – many from the OU Environmental Studies Program itself – who will give a 15-20 minute introduction or interactive presentation prior to the start of the film. This pre-show activity is meant to engage the audience and offer important things to consider while watching the films.

All film screening events will start at 7:00 p.m.

The series is made possible thanks to the support of: University Libraries, Honors Tutorial College, Office of Sustainability, and The Voinovich School’s Environmental Studies Program.

Fall Sustainability Series: THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING

Watch Trailer Director: Avi Lewis

About the film

What if confronting the climate crisis is the best chance we’ll ever get to build a better world?

Filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change.

Directed by Avi Lewis, and inspired by Naomi Klein’s international non-fiction bestseller of the same name, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines, from Montana’s Powder River Basin to the Alberta Tar Sands, from the coast of South India to Beijing and beyond.

Interwoven with these stories of struggle is Klein’s narration, connecting the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there. Throughout the film, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.

Also included will be a screening of STAND UP, a short animated film by Ohio-native Jenny Morgan from SaveOhioParks.org. The film is meant to be a response to Ohio’s proposal to begin fracking in our state parks.

About the series

Athena Cinema, University Libraries, and OHIO’s Environmental Studies Program present the 11th annual Sustainability Film Series.

This year’s batch of films will be centered on reflecting the urgency of what is before us. After a decade of screening movies and hosting discussions led by experts from the OHIO student body and faculty and the Athens community detailing the problems facing the world, this semester’s focus will be on solutions.

The films will demonstrate that a collaborative approach to problem-solving — involving all members of our global community, regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender — is a necessity. Education is the first crucial step in both understanding the world’s problems and developing sustainable solutions.

Following the screening of each of these beautiful, thought-provoking, and timely films, audience members are invited to join us for a panel discussion hosted by OHIO faculty members, students, and members of the Athens community.

This screening will take place at The Ridges Auditorium located at 135 Ridges Circle.

The series is possible thanks to the support of: Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, OHIO Honors Program, Honors Tutorial College, Cutler Scholars, Office of Sustainability, Center for Campus & Community Engagement, University College, Athens International Film and Video Festival, and beloved nonprofits and businesses.

Free admission and post-show discussion as part of the Fall Sustainability Series.
