Frame of Mind: INSIDE OUT 2 with Caitlin Kraus

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m. as we begin a new film series presented by NAMI Athens in observance of Mental Health Awareness Month!

Admission is FREE – Tickets are required

The Frame of Mind Series, seeks to showcase stories that serve as bridges to real conversations, fostering a space for empathy and connection, a space where we, as a community, can lean into vulnerability and face difficult conversations together.

So for the month of May, we invite you to embrace empathy, get together, and step into a new Frame of Mind!

About the film

The emotions are back!

Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust all return in the follow-up to the hit 2015 animated film from Pixar. Young Riley is now a teen who’s reached some big new emotional milestones – she’s now a high school freshman, treading the road of adolescence, and heading to a three-day hockey camp where she’ll be thrust into competition with other young ladies – all of which undoubtedly pose challenges to her emotional well-being. As a result, Joy and her cohorts have created a new section in Riley’s adolescent mind, the “Sense of Self”, as well as a mechanism meant to relay negative thoughts and memories to the back recesses of Riley’s subconscious. However, along with physical maturity comes a higher level of emotional complexity. Joining Joy and the others are 4 new emotions that will complicate Riley’s stability – Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Anxiety – and raise the stakes of Joy’s efforts to keep Riley on an even (and positive) keel as Riley tries to cope with all the new emotionally-charged experiences of young-adulthood.

Frame of Mind: ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND with China Billotte Verhoff

Watch Trailer

Join us Tuesday, May 26th at 7:00 p.m. as our Frame of Mind series concludes with a genre-bending film by French auteur Michel Gondry and surrealist writer Charlie Kaufman!

Admission is FREE – Tickets are required

This event will include a pre-show talk by Dr. China Billotte Verhoff of the OHIO School of Communication

The Frame of Mind Series seeks to showcase stories that serve as bridges to real conversations, fostering a space for empathy and connection, a space where we, as a community, can lean into vulnerability and face difficult conversations together.

So for the month of May, we invite you to embrace empathy, get together, and step into a new Frame of Mind!

About the film

With an ensemble cast that includes Jim Carey, Kate Winslet, Mark Ruffalo, and Kirsten Dunst, this mind-bending romance incorporates elements of sci-fi and the surreal to tell the story of Joel Barish (Carey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Winslet) who, in the wake of a falling out, both decide to undergo a brain procedure whereby their memories get erased by a sketchy company that promises the result of post-procedure happiness. But, even with their (good and bad) memories erased, their true feelings might just be enough to bring the two back together again.

From the minds of two of Hollywood’s most-visionary creators comes this love story the likes of which you’ve never seen — it serves as a reminder that, no matter how much you try to rid your mind of heartache, the power of love can guide you to where you deserve to be.

About the speaker

China C. Billotte Verhoff (Ph.D, Purdue) is an Associate Professor of Interpersonal Communication in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University. Situate at the intersection of interpersonal and organizational communication, her research program explores the lived experiences of individuals with stigmatized and marginalized identities to address systemic issues of inequality and foster well-being. With her work on stigma, support, disclosure, and social justice, her broader goal is to a) re-center marginalized voices in knowledge creation and communication theorizing, and b) highlight the implications of her work for communication-centered approaches to equality and justice. Her most recent projects have examined the discursive forces that animate the meanings of maternity leave and how mothers internalize , navigate and resist the stigmatization of their rage. Dr. Billotte Verhoff’s work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Communication Monographs, Sex Roles, the Journal of Language and Social Psychology, and Health Communication.

Dr. Billotte Verhoff teachers graduate and undergraduate courses in interpersonal communication, family communication, and communication and ethics. Highlighting the synergistic interplay between her research, teaching, and service, Dr. Billotte Verhoff has spent several years facilitating inclusive pedagogy efforts at the university. She is a co-facilitator of the Inclusive Pedagogy Academy (IPA) run by the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment. Her work in the area of inclusive pedagogy has been recognized with the Chairs and Deans Emerging Leadership Award. From the Hills and Hollers: OCTOBER SKY with Dr. Amy Wolfe

Watch Trailer Director: Joe Johnston
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Laura Dern

About the film

Based on the memoir Rocket Boys by American engineer Homer H. Hickman Jr., the film tells the story of four young men who, while growing up in the coal fields of rural West Virginia in the late-1950s, witness the world-shaking launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite and are inspired to start building rockets of their own, seeking a path to the stars instead of succumbing to the well-tread paths that would lead them down into the coal mines.

About the series

Due to the resounding success of the series launch during 2022-2023, we are thrilled to present the 2nd annual From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Film Series for 2023-2024.

The series seeks to foster a deeper connection between the Athens city and university communities and the cultural legacy of the surrounding region through films that examine the many facets, both positive and negative, of life in Appalachia. This batch of films is, in large part, the product of filmmakers who have intimate knowledge of living in this environment and, as a result, are well-suited for representing the realities of Appalachia on the big screen.

Short introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission.

This screening will take place at the Athena Cinema located at 20 S. Court St.

This series is sponsored by the College of Health Sciences and Professions, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences, OHIO Honors Program, Center for Campus and Community Engagement, Athens County Public Libraries, University Libraries, GO Local, University College, the Center for Law, Justice, and Culture, and the Ohio Arts Council.

The Met: Live in HD: Gabriela Lena Frank’s EL ÚLTIMO SUEÑO DE FRIDA Y DIEGO

The Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera, a “confident, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker.

The screening will begin at 12:55 p.m. and will conclude at approximately 3:45 p.m.

Admission $20 (Senior $18, Children $8)

OUTlaws Pride Series: BOTTOMS

Watch Trailer

Join us Thursday, June 4th at 7:00 p.m. as we kick off this year’s Pride Series with a gut-punchingly good comedy!

Admission is FREE – Tickets are required

About the film

Best friends PJ and Josie — a couple of lesbian virgin outcasts at Rockbridge Falls High School — just want to be “in” with the in-crowd of cheerleaders (and, well, make out with them). The duo decides to hatch a plan to start a fight club at their school under the guise of female empowerment, but its true intent is to create a way to get attractive girls to ultimately have sex with them. When a couple of football players begin to suspect that things don’t add up, they start causing trouble for PJ and Josie and their transparent plans start to fall apart. From there, things get weirder and wilder, culminating in a slug-fest between Rockbridge Falls HS and its rival Huntington.

Equal parts buddy comedy, high school flick, and cult film, Bottoms is the second feature directed by Emma Seligman (Shiva Baby). Co-written by Rachel Sennott (who also stars in the role of “PJ”) and starring Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), this film is a unique and over-the-top take on what it means to be gay during the impressionable years of high school. Hailed by critics and audiences alike, Bottoms is the kind of film you won’t easily forget!
